View Full Version : What airline do you...and will we miss (soon)?

In the past two decades, we've seen one to many airlines ceasing operations due to hefty competition, and since today's skies are being dominated by a lot of "well-off" nations and stockholders, i'm fearing some sort of difficulty for other airlines to maintain a steady pace with other bigger operators.

1) So, what airline do you miss seeing?

2) What airline do you believe; if any, could be the next one to cease operations within the next coming months/years?

1) I personally miss the Brazilian carrier, Varig..preferably in the MD-11 colours.

2) Somewhat tells me for the Greek flagship, Olympic Air. I see them less over Europe at the more high-demanded airports.

It was a great shame to see BMI Baby disappear.

Cannot speculate as to which airline will fold next.

I miss Silver City in the days when they were flying Lydd/Le Touquet using Bristol 170s. 20 minutes with 3 cars and about 20 pax when the Sealink ferry took anything up to 120 minutes.

Who will go next? Somebody we've never heard of in Africa probably and we won't even know they've gone! I wouldn't be surprised to see Iberia go into bankruptcy to solve their problems but I doubt things will get that far.

Branniff international and their "big orange" jumbo's........must have been an early easy jet ;-)

Interesting input guys, thanks for sharing!

Yes, Braniff's orange beast is something I would have liked to see in real life other than magazines.

Somewhat tells me for the Greek flagship, Olympic Air. I see them less over Europe at the more high-demanded airports.

Olympic have withdrawn from most of their international routes, Aegean is now the de facto national carrier of Greece. It plans to take over what’s left of Olympic if the EU will allow – although the two brands would not be merged in the first instance. Aegean is a quality airline (which Olympic never was) and was routinely profitable until the Greek economy collapsed. If the merger is not allowed, Olympic will just fade away and die.

Several other European ‘national airlines’ are on the extremely endangered list.

Who do I miss? Malev. An excellent little airline, far better than most gave it credit for.

How about more recently EOS, the VIP carrier, 757 with roughly 25 fully flat beds. Can't to this day think why it failed as it was always full of pax and freight. And spare a thought for its poor relation Maxjet.....whose demise was NO surprise unfortunaly

The one airline and era I miss the most is British Midland during the time they operated with a single class Diamond Service.

Miss air2000 but not the uniforms of the stewardesses, they were horrific. Liked the old Britannia aircraft 732's first trips to Spain were on these. White with a blue/red stripe. Remember landing in Birmingham and seated rear of the wing, hearing the gasps and concerns of the passengers around us who noticed a bit of the engine coming off . Of course this was the reverse thrust, but we didn't know this at the time :ugh:
As for who's going to go next no idea. Eastern keep plodding on and how are TCX going.????

1) So, what airline do you miss seeing?

Undoubtedly Pan Am, British Midland, Canadian Pacific, Swissair & Laker.

2) What airline do you believe; if any, could be the next one to cease operations within the next coming months/years?

Sorry to appear critical but this question is a bit ghoulish (had my wrists slapped for a similar post a couple of years ago). Please don't take it personally but I have great sympathy for all those people employed in the airline industry (and many other sectors) who are forever looking over their shoulders and in fear of being made redundant.

1) So, what airline do you miss seeing? ..... LAKER AIRWAYS

2) What airline do you believe; if any, could be the next one to cease operations within the next coming months/years? .... SOMEWHAT IRRESPONSIBLE TO ASK BECAUSE "RUMOUR CONTROL" ALONE CAN PERSUADE THE FLYING PUBLIC NOT TO BOOK PUTTING AN OPERATOR OUT OF BUSINESS

I understand; thoughtful of you, and I never take anything personal here at this community ;)

Phileas Fogg

Calm your caps ;), you honestly have to understand my intentions are far from persuading that to happen. Secondly, the 600 thread "brief views" will doubtful have any influence to the 3-7 mentioned operators. However I do understand your concerns on the questions.

The Loss of Ansett ( Ansett Australia - Home (http://www.ansett.com.au/) ) is surely one of the saddest and most frustrating stories of the failure of an airline.
