Italian Defendant in Lion Air Phone Threat Case Dies in Hospital
Andrea Geovanni Soreti, a 49-year-old Italian national on trial in Yogyakarta for allegedly making a telephoned bomb threat to airline Lion Air in October, died in the early hours of Monday morning, a report said.
Soreti, who had lived in the country for the past three years, was charged with committing an act of terrorism at the Sleman District Court on Thursday, an offense that carries up to 15 years in prison. He was accused of having made a telephone call to Lion Air on Oct. 14, 2012, saying there was a bomb on board a Lion Air plane flying the Yogyakarta-Bali route.
Joko Hastaryo, the director of the Sleman General Hospital in Yogyakarta, was quoted by Kompas online as saying that Soreti was admitted at around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday and that the hospital had tried to refer him to other hospitals but all had no vacant beds in their intensive care units.
He said that based on the preliminary autopsy, Soreti died of severe dehydration, sepsis and kidney failure.
“A complication was possible, but we cannot yet conclude what caused the death” Joko said, according to Kompas online.
Agustinus Sigit Tri, the doctor at the Cebongan Penitentiary in Sleman where Soreti was being detained, said that over the past few days, Soreti’s health condition had continued to deteriorate. The detainee was also suffering from diarrhea and weak appetite.
“The patient also had difficulties sleeping,” Joko said, adding that the man had admitted to taking sedatives while incarcerated.
The body remains at the hospital morgue in Sleman.
The Italian Consulate in Jakarta could not be immediately reached for comment.
