Libre Office 4 and SoftMaker Office

I was just looking at the PC World comments about Libre Office 4. Some were not all that good. I'm running W7 Pro

I write in Word Perfect 8 which I have on every computer, but I've got just one copy of MS Word. I really need more, but with the book in the last stages of editing, and as an old dog, I just don't dare spend too much time learning new tricks.

I've tended to stick with OpenOffice 3.4. I figure that the LibreOffice folks are more interested in GeeWhiz than in stodgy stability. Something of the frequent-new-versions mentality of some distros of Linux.

That said, I discovered that OO Wrtier doesn't display "watermarks" in at least some DOCX documents

You might want to try IBM Lotus Symphony - IBM Lotus Symphony (http://www-03.ibm.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.nsf/home)

It's free and in its own quiet way remarkably good.

It is also the only non-MS suite that seems to handle complex Powerpoint presentations accurately - remarkable!

Also has a built-in browser that is surprisingly convenient.

Give it a go (I'm considering standardising the office on it...still testing).

It really depends on what you want, i.e. which functions you really need or make use of on a regular basis.

I'm still a fan of OO 3.4.x as it handles large files well (better than MS Word) and, to me, is intuitive.
