I have given up my CAA/JAA (soon to be EASA) Class 2 medical and just keep my Class 2 going because I have stopped flying Professionally.

I keep my IR going with my MEP. Am I correct in believing that I need an audiogram every 2 years to hold the IR?

Can I ask why? The cost difference in my experience is negligible

The difference in cost is not negligible. My AME does not have the kit so I have to go to a specialist hearing unit and pay for the audiogram.
