Hi

I have compiled some info regarding the number of DGCA CPL's issued since 2004 to 2012 .

The source of information is from the DGCA website . I searched for the number of CPL issued every year and then compiled that into a table .

Remember that this info is only for those that have been successfully issued a CPL by the Indian DGCA .
There are many more left still stuck in various stages of the conversion process

Hi Cyril,
This is nice work. Congratuulations. But if you look closely, the numbers largely mirror the market outlook and sentiments (no thanks to VJM for that, Im sure). Whats important is how many are still out there waiting in the wings without a job. I'm an eternal optimistic, but really cannot ignore reality. I'm afraid, unless the KF mess gets sorted, or a major player jumps in, this list isn't going anywhere.

True the numbers mirror the rise and fall of the Indian Aviation industry albeit with a delayed reaction .

All those CPL holders that jumped on the bandwagon in the year 2007 seeing how good the industry was in 2005 , 2006 and 2007 got their Indian DGCA CPL in 2009 .
Thats the reason why there is such a huge number in 2009 .
By then the boom was pretty much dead

The rest of the numbers trickled on towards 2010 , 2011

In 2010 and 2011 a lot hiring took place at Jet Airways , IndiGo and Spice

The 2012 numbers should have been much higher than 2011 had it not been for the skill test in India rule .
This delayed the plans for conversions for thousands of CPL holders .

We should see this number swell in 2013 year end .

There are still a lot more CPL holders out there that have their ICAO CPL but stuck in the conversion process either at exams or some other stage .


A lot KF pilots have managed to find jobs in IndiGo ( I believe around 300 were hired ) , Spice etc
Even now Jet Airways is hiring FO's with 100 hours on the ATR 72 which is clearly targeted at the Kingfisher FO's
They are looking for Non type rated ATR 72 Captains as well

Experienced Pilots have moved to the middle east , singapore etc .

I believe GoAir had conducted an exam sometime back in 2012 for experienced A320 Kingfisher FO's and around 80 appeared :eek:

Air India Express is also looking for Trainee Captains on the 737 so I am guessing the rest of the Kingfisher captains would be absorbed over there


Barring the unemployed Kingfisher Pilots I have been trying to come up with some numbers on the total number of unemployed Indian DGCA CPL .

Kind of hard to come with an exact number but my early estimates are around
4000-5500 unemployed Indian DGCA CPL holders who never had a job

I personally know a a number of people who were on their way to convert their license in India and were thrown off track by the new testing rules. The number of unemployed CPL holders will keep on swelling for some time to come.

The problem is not limited to the fact that there are 5-6000 unemployed CPL holders in the market. The nauseating fact is that a majority of these young pilots will never ever find a flying position in their lives. Even in the most optimistic scenario where the industry grows at break neck speed, i doubt even a third of these unemployed people will find jobs. And even for the lucky ones who do manage to find jobs, it is going to be a long long wait.

Somebody please tell me that i am wrong and that a good majority of CPL holders will manage to find jobs at some point in their lives.:sad:

i am afraid you are right. With a ballpark figure of 6000 unemployed CPLs even with a new startup airline not more than 1500 will find employment in the next five years. Even for a startup airline priority is commanders not CPL holders
