Hi everyone

Im just doing some research on SQ. Are all the bus pilots flying all 3 or are the specified to one roster and thats is? as for the 340's what are the rosters like and the layovers in both EWR and LAX like? Same with the 380 as well?

Any other information anyone could give me on the SQ bus rosters would be helpful, many thanks.

I believe you need a separate type rating for A380 and A330/A340.

They fly only one type
They d ont hire any expats anymore except on Sing Cargo division
There is about only 72 expats total and most of them are in their last contract
By 3 years time probably no more expats

Captains are being asked to take unpaid leave, the A340s are going when the non stop flights to New York are axed in March. Expat contracts not being renewed.

More chance with Silk Air/Scoot/Tiger at the moment if you are happy with regional and/or low cost.

SINGAPORE - Citing an oversupply of pilots and slow growth, Singapore Airlines (SIA) will be letting 76 pilots go before the expiry of their fixed-term contracts by June 30 this year.

SIA said in a statement today that pilots had previously been let go only when their contracts expired.

The Airline added that it will provide assistance to help the released pilots pursue employment opportunities within the SIA Group and with other airlines.

Previously implemented measures to address the surplus of pilots include voluntary no-pay leave and the suspension of the cadet pilot recruitment program.

SIA to release pilots on fixed-term contracts

Singapore Airlines has taken the difficult decision to advance the planned release of 76 pilots who are employed on fixed-term contracts. The Airline had previously been releasing pilots only upon expiry of their contracts.

The pilots are expected to be released by June 30, 2013. The Airline will assist them to pursue employment opportunities within the SIA Group and with other airlines.

Singapore Airlines currently has a surplus of pilots to its operational requirements, as the global financial crisis of 2009-10 had resulted in excess capacity and slower-than-expected growth.

The Airline had earlier implemented other measures to address the surplus, such as voluntary no pay leave and the suspension of cadet pilot recruitment.

Pilots employed on fixed-term contracts make up about 4 per cent of Singapore Airlines' total pilots' workforce.

Which is to say...that its the expat pilots who are, once again, at the mercy of the company. I was speaking the other day to one who had to leave and his thoughts were interesting...the SQ pilots union ALPA S actually had the temerity to publish a headline in their little rag that said: "No More ANG MO by 2014".
Not to put too fine a point on it, but I found it rather a racist statement and typical of the Singaporean attitude towards expats in the country. He's not surprised and nor am I but it's too bad that the attitude exists even now.

There was once when Singaporeans keep saying that us Aussies were rascist and did not welcome them. But just look at how they now deep seatedly scorn the Chinese and Indians for making up a LARGE percentage of the workforce, and hence population. The AngMohs make up a sizeable portion, but nowhere compared to the Chinese or Indians.
As with the selfish part, look no further. When was the last time a local held the door open for you?, when was the last time someone said 'thank you' when you help the door open for them here?, when did you last see a Singaporean use his/her turn signals?, when was the last time you signalled your intention to filter lanes, but the ugly Singaporean sped up to cut you off, just so he is ahead of you.
So you see, you can't expect much from SQ, sadly. Takes decades to build a brand, takes a few years for bean counters to break that down for their personal career advancement. Might turn out to be another Red Rat......

The political tug war to place these guys on other outfits within the brand has to be incredible. I'd be surprised if the after shocks are not felt at Sin Cargo, Scoot:ugh:

None of the pilots affected would have considered a voluntary move to SCOOT whilst they had a job with SQ, it's like going from F to Y class. However now that termination looms in front of them the option becomes very attractive to someone who doesn't fancy a move to the Middle East or is settled in Singapore.

SQ management have saved themselves a lot of money by effectively moving expensive expats out of mainline and providing their low cost arm with a source of locally licensed, type rated, known background employees.
