Lego accused of racism by Turkish community who say toy is offensive because as is 'based on a mosque' | Mail Online (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2267062/Lego-accused-racism-Turkish-community-say-toy-offensive-based-mosque.html)

Lego has been accused of racism by the Turkish community over a Star Wars toy allegedly depicting a mosque.
The critics claim that the Jabba's Palace model, part of Lego's Star Wars range, offends Muslims as it resembles the Hagia Sophia mosque in Istanbul - one of the world's most renowned mosques.

Members of the Turkish Cultural Community of Austria group also accused the toy manufacturer of depicting Asians as having 'deceitful and criminal personalities'.

Toy: The Jabba's Palace Lego set has been criticised by the Turkish Cultural Community of Austria group, which has described it as offensive to the Muslim community

A post on the community's website contains a picture of the slug-like creature's Lego home, pointing out similarities with the Istanbul mosque.

Outraged Muslims have criticised the toy producer on the community's website, accusing it of deliberately placing contextual errors in the toy.
The case came to light when a Turkish man expressed his dissatisfaction with the toy after it was purchased for his son by a family member.

After investigating, Dr Melissa GŁnes, General Secretary of the Turkish Cultural Community, said that Lego had been contacted with an official complaint.

Comparisons: A post appeared on the group's website pointing out features of the Lego set and comparing them to the Istanbul mosque

I wonder why nobody has complained about racism in the entire Star Wars series. The 'baddies' seem to be English and the "goodies" American. Plus Chewbacca does all the hard work and is obviously of Afro origin: he is the "substitute slave" of the future. The series should be banned immediately and huge fines imposed on Spielberg (or is it Lucas ? All tending to blur into one at my age).

as it resembles the Hagia Sophia mosque in Istanbul - one of the world's most renowned mosques. Strange, looks more like a desecrated Christian Basilica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagia_Sophia) to me.

Maybe they shouldn't be so quick to take offence. :hmm:

Phew, and I thought the OP was talking about the number of black Lego pieces in the kit not equaling the number of white Lego pieces in the kit not equaling the number of yellow Lego pieces in the kit not equaling.... and so on.

Hagia Sophia was once a significant Greek Orthodox Christian church during the rule of Constantine 1 who converted to Christianity. The Turks have even preserved some of those features after they converted it to a mosque. I think this is more like anti-Americanism by a silly bunch of fools.

HS is not a mosque, it has been a museum for quiet a number of years. I even think it was constructed before dear profet was born.

Built in 360. Secularised in 1931. It's a building, not a religious site. Designed by 2 Greeks, on the orders of a Macedonian arguably working for the Italians, after the previous two buildings were destroyed by...Turkish rioters. Lots of civic pride there then.

..and for over 200 years it was guarded by the Varangian Guard, Vikings who included Danes. So I guess Denmark has as much right to copy it as anyone.

The picture above of the young damsel dressed like princess Leia is a farce. (Aside from the fact that said young damsel is fugly.)

Here is the real Princess Leia in the form of the extremely delicious Olivia Munn:
