Toshiba Satellite C660 Pentium P6100 2GHz 6GB RAM 50GB free space on 232GB HD W7 Home Premium - the hard drive is groaning and running almost constantly even when simply PPRuNeing. This has been constant for at least an hour, maybe two or more - it's only just got on my nerves (although it has died down occasionally before continuing at full chat).
I have searched this forum for earlier discussions but found nothing.

Is there a utility (like Task Manager but something a bit more specific) which will show what processes are doing the accessing?

The majority of the CPU activity appears to be attributable to Firefox (18.0 with an update awaiting a restart).

Having written this it has just stopped . . .

Maybe it was Firefox doing preliminary work?

I use this:

Acronis Drive Monitor - free software to monitor server, workstation and PC hard disk drives (http://www.acronis.co.uk/homecomputing/products/drive-monitor/)

there are others

You can find information on which processes are reading from/writing to the HDD by clicking on the 'Performance Monitor' button found on the Task Manager window.

Magic! Thanks.

Sorted . . .

Just have to wait for the next time the HD runs.

And then the Resource monitor button in that screen.

What was that colourful freebie that did much the same task - one which was popular on this forum before W7 came along?

There's a freebie called What's Running which tells you not only that, but loads more info.

Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx)

Free, from MS itself.
