Can a Cathay pilot pilot have a second job? I was curious because my last business jet contract wouldn't allw me to have one, I had to be 100% exclusive. I was wondering if the powers that be at CP allow you to have second jobs that don't involve flying so no chance at flight hours adding up or schedule conflicts...:}

Flipping burgers is just fine as long as you leave the octopus reader alone!

I am going to presume you don’t have HK permanent residency. You can correct me if I am wrong on this point.

When an expat is employed by CX, CX will sponsor them for seven years until they are able to obtain HK permanent residency. Until this happens they can only work for CX.

I'd have thought that employment as male escorts would attract the FIGJAMs :p

The Contract specifically prohibits employment by anyone else without the written consent of the Employer.

This is very much a standard point in employment contracts these days, and not just for Airlines.

True, but some individuals have applied for, and received permission. Possible examples would be starting their own business, or being "employed" in some capacity by their wife's business. Or, as per Basil's post, being a male escort.

That being said, some of the iCadets on C Scales with a family might seriously need to get a second job to supplement their income.

I can just see it now. "Sorry guys, do you mind if I take 8hrs of controlled rest in the seat as we fly past Kunming? I've been hard at work at my other job all day, and I'm just beat."

I've had a second job for about 3 years, but I am a permanent resident. CX don't need to know from what I understand. It's is a non-flying job and as long as I'm rested before a flight...

Yes you can have a second job, even a flying one. Our rules have specifics when it comes to flying jobs, but it can be approved by the DFO if it falls outside the rules. I know from personally having done it.

Hey I'mbatman,

Question about US-based domiciles. Has Cathay agreed to keep those domiciles open going forward, or, will all pilots ultimately be forced to move to HKG if they wish to continue employment with Cathay?

Cheers

I know a few SOs that have second jobs. One guy is a DJ on his G days and makes more than his CX salary. Pity really when a CX pilot has to work two jobs to be able to live at a reasonable standard in HK.

Iver,

The US bases are open, but there haven't been any vacancies in over three years now and there are none on the horizon. Even if there were, they'd go waaaaay senior. In fact, most here are convinced that the bases will be allowed to wither on the vine, meaning they won't grow, but they won't close them either.

If CX decides to close bases, than yes, you would have to go to HKG.

I got authorised from the DFO and now I have my own paper run in the morning.
I start in TST and finish up in Tung Chung just before my morning sign on at despatch. If you want to join me you' ll need your uniform (you can use CX one for the first 2 months it work just fine) and a valid Octopus card.
Happy new year to all
;)
