Is it possible to log hours on a permit type aircraft? My friend has a Zenair 601 which I will be allowed to hire out once finished for a good price. Do the CAA classify any hours flown on this type of aircraft to be counted towards the required 150?

MTOW is 544kg

544 MToW is above microlight limitations, so long as it's registered as group A (which it should be given MTOW) then it's like flying a normal plane from an hours building point of view.

As a side note, don't tell anyone you're "renting it" because that is definitely not allowed on the permit system :).

Not renting, just borrowing! No profit to be made.

Glad it will be fine for hour building, makes things cheaper for me.

I think he meant the aircraft would be finished for a good price.
