I am looking for old codes beginning from 1948 to the present. My stepfather is 98 yrs old and has been a pilot all his life and been in 4 wars, so he is writing his history from his log books. Is there a list of 4 letter codes he could use? I have tried lists from ICAO and IATA and not found the ones he is looking for.

Thanks for your help.

John - Are you after decodes or encodes ? If you were to post a wish-list (of whatever) here - there will probably be a rush of experts to help.

From what you wrote, there is every probability that some of the fields never qualified for formal ICAO or IATA Codes, but there were/are many other more local identifying Codes.

I wasn't sure if the query was aimed at more clearly identifying places to the reader (of the history) or at pursuing further research (by the historian.) Bit more background might help. LFH

The Bloodhound Gang did a song called:
Foxtrot
Uniform
Charlie
Kilo

And I always wondered what airport that referred to?
