On flightaware, QF8 is showing DFW - AKL with the less than normal info.
So is this a planned fuel diversion enroute to Brissie?
Then going on over to the Auckland airport website it says "diversion".

Turns out it's ops normal for QF 8 - divert somewhere across the Pacific.
Just checked my sms's and got something from a family member on the flight whilst they were in the lounge, "any chance of a scenic stop in an island paradise on the way, odds?"
Well NZ could be considered under all those categories.
FedSec, well it is post AGM so anything is a possibility.
It's apparently nicknamed - QF8 - Qantas Late
Warp speed to AKL. Pre- position some crew. Warp speed to Brissie and you're not too far behind the original plan.

QF8 - Transition Checklist complete
PF - "Chewie, lock in the auxiliary power"
PM - "Warp power selected". :8
QF8 probably has less diversions than the SP's used to have on the direct LAX-SYD. Certainly far less than the PANAM SP's.

Trying not to be to much of a smart arse but I don't think today's passengers are relieved that there are fewer diversions than PANAM used to have on 747 SPs. That route doesn't work on a -400. More evidence of Joyce's inexperience.
Step 1: Go to The Boeing Company (http://www.boeing.com)
Step 2: Read about the Boeing 777 200 LR
Step 3: Order some
Step 4: Start running believable and reliable ultra long range routes like SYD-FW, SYD-ORD, PER-LHR
Step 5: Congratulate self on having done the right thing
