Having visited the Manchester Flight Training Exhibition, & being interested in all of the ATPL correspondence courses available, I took the time to look at most of the exhibitor's coursework & material. I have come to the conclusion that the best package, with excellent illustrations & diagrams, accompanied by a CD-rom with moving illustration, is offered by Bristol Ground School.
Hope this is of interest to those of you contemplating starting a long distance learning course.

PPSC are adequate but there are no colour diagrams, the CD-ROM is expensive and is merely a reproduction of the notes and there is excessive padding with unnecessary material. If you've got plenty of time and like studying for the sake of it, PPSC is the one to go for. Oh, and their website has been under construction since Bill Gates was in short trousers.

Heard the same thing about PPSC that Ham Phisted mentioned.
From the horses mouth, some very dissappointed and bright young people recently put up with poor material and sloppy organisation at said place.
Only saying what I heard!!!!!!!

I checked out alot of the countries top schools and I believe I made the right choice in going distant learning with BRISTOL ground school, (can't wait to start the next frame !) :) :) :)

I have said this many times before. Bristol are probably the best you will find. I did all my ground exams with maestro Alex and team and didn't drop a subject. I grant it took a certain amount of effort on my behalf, but the guidance from BGS was absolutely superb! Look nowhere else. ;) ;)

But if you did want to go to PPSC
you would be very lonely sat on your own staring blankly at a white board with no one to talk to , as they went BUST months ago.

I did my ATPL exams from Feb-Jul 1999 in UK, and I studied with PPSC correspondence course. You did learn alot of extraneous (and outdated) material, but it was decently presented. I heard at the time that Bristol 'taught the exams' if that's what you're looking for.
Anyways with PPSC correspondence I was 14 for 15 written exams (Damn Air Law) so it can't be that bad. They didn't offer CD-rom back then. But if they're bust then the choice got easier.

Am just about to embark on a Bristol GS course, and I admit it - mostly based on the glowing reports here and thereabouts which even places them above courses like Glasgow where I could have studied under the watchful arm of ex-BAe Prestwick instructors.........never mind. Not, wanting to do them down, my choice is simply because I would like to remain in my own home as the only alternative was to spend 90 minutes travelling to and fro the classes - hardly the way to promote good grunt for when it really gets tough.......
Still...all best luck to Glasgow folks and especially you, Frances, who sent me a grand email.....keep in touch....and thankyou, maybe we can fly together sometime....

The really appealing thing about the Bristol notes are the odd nuggets of humour hidden within. Its like an Easter egg hunt.
One that sticks in my mind is the bit about Pavalov's dogs. I think I was starting to nod off, thought it read strange, read it again, larffed out loud. Brought me out of my stupor so can't be bad.

I too chose Bristol after a bit of research and looking at the opinions on PPRUNE. Passed all 8 Module 1 exams in Jan, sitting the last 6 in June. Can't fault their notes and the brush-up courses are awesome - zero to hero in two weeks. All this while doing a full-time job, so they must be doing something right.

PPSC are no more. However some of the team who ran PPSC (amongst them, Roger Henshaw, David Webb and Pete Swatton), now run an organisation called GTS (Ground Training Services).
GTS uses manuals produced by a company called Click2PPSC, but are working on their own manuals (not sure when they will be ready).
Whatever, I have seen the manuals that they are currently using, and IMHO they are excellent. And the instructors at GTS are also very good indeed- some of the most respected in the business.
FYI, I didn't do my groundschool with them!

Anyone have any feedback on the NAC, Naples Air Centre, course out of Florida. I'm Canadian and you can write the exams in Orlando, which would be easier than the UK. Although, quality over convenience. I must look into Bristol as well.

I have used their notes for more than one of my subjects. One manual provided by my GS was woefully inadequate, and I bought the GTS one for that subject.
I also borrowed a set of their notes from a friend to help studying for some of the other subjects, just as a backup to the stuff I already had. I found all their notes to be very good indeed.
