Francesco de Pinedo flew the third aircraft that made a flight into Australia from overseas. This was in a little single engine seaplane in 1925. He and his engineer, Campanelli, flew 55,000 kms from Italy to Australia, Japan and home to Italy.

His book of that flight, published the following year, 'Un Volo di 55,000 Chilometri' has not yet come out in an English edition. I have been looking for a low budget translator for years. Anyone care to look at Chapter One for starters?

Australian troops in Italy in 1944 came across the Savoia S-16 of that great flight lying derelict on an airfield. They were surprised to find the RAAF crest on the nose. In 1925 there had been an engine change at the RAAF base Point Cook near Melbourne.
