Found this little bit of history while trolling for something else. Been flying up here for years but had never heard of a mosquito crashing near Mornington Island.
Has anyone got any more details on this?

Can someone please add 1947 to the thread title? Got a bit of a fright there. Up until a few weeks ago it wouldn't have mattered.

Interesting story...with conflicting takes on how they died.
Hadnt heard of this one at all. Boston ? crash on Mornington Is. itself and of course the B 24 "Little Eva" to the south of, on the mainland.
"The Savage Wilderness" is a good read about that tragic incident.
FBF..you can relax... I'm sure there would be mega publicity if the newly minted, airborne Mossie was leaving NZed to go Trans Tasman. Dont think it will happen. When done in NZ, doesnt it go in a box to USA owner?
Would be tremendous to have such a bird roaring around Oz tho! :ok:
Will be interested to hear more re TE 746 at Sidney Island.

It was the first two words that gave me palpitations. The thought that KA114 might cross the ditch didn't enter my mind.

What is the state of play with Mossies in Oz, projects, pieces or parts?? War Museum has one? Camden Museum had one without the wood? or very little of.
Any new build would be astro-dollars!. Fuselage shells available from NZ tho.
Last saw and heard 2 Mosquitoes in VERY close formation do a pass at about 200ft down the runway at Exeter. The wing tip of #2 was tucked in behind the wing of #1 and forward of the tailplane. The sound of 4 Merlins in full song made the neck hair prickle up. They were back from a target towing gunnery sortie for 2 seat Vampires. Oh for a video camera then . They split upwards left and right...a sight to behold.!
One of crashed at an airshow about 10 ? years ago...and that made it extinct as a flying machine in the UK. (?)
Meanwhile back on Sidney Island any surviving metal wreckage would be difficult to locate , no doubt. 65 yrs of cyclones and tides shifting sand bars would see to that. Looks like a dry and dificult little island to survive on, without survival skills. RIP RAF chaps.

The only wreckage ive heard about on mornington island was some USAF twin engine thing that did a precautionary landing on the northern beaches there and l did see it from the air
at one time. Used to have an article on it but thats long gone.
