NEXUS 7 for navigation??

Has anybody experience with the google pad nexus 7 for navigation with sky map or air nav pro???
We plan to equip our fleet of 15 helos with tablets in combination with sky map!
We dont want to use ipads! ..so looking for practible tablet pc! So most important thing is a good function of the gps modul! Fast aquiring satelite und continious gps data!

I'd be careful using equipment that is not specifically approved for airborne use. You may invalidate your AOC and the insurance.

iPad may be approved, but I can't guarantee it. I do know the iPad is being used as a flight bag - EFB - by many carriers already.

The approvals for aerial use take months (years?) And cost lots of biccies ($) so the price rises proportionately.

There may be other issues with unapproved navigation equipment. You had best check with your local civil aviation authority.

Why did you decide against the iPad?
Too Expensive?

I might just be captured by the appeal of new products, but for those looking to update the 3 year old iPad version 1 (or perhaps in a smaller cockpit) and used to using with suction mounts this just might be perfect? - haven't seen one yet but the screen is a bigger proportion of the overall size and directly comparing the sim equipped versions the mini weighs 308g vs the original iPads 730g which must equate to a lot less shake, and a shorter arm from the mount. I reckon this could due a happy medium, the only complaint I've had of the iPad for navigation is the fact it's hard to eliminate shake on a suction mount, and it can slightly get in the way. I wonder what the trade off in screen size feels like once you've got used the the iPad.

you are right, the size is our problem! we want to fix it on top of the panel, so one opportunity is the new mini ipad.....
is it true that all external used equipment like GPS needed an approval from JAR??
that means, putting your iphone with navigation app on the window is illegal???

I have a Galaxy Tab 7 inch with Air Nav Pro.
It works okay as backup or so but not 100% reliable.

As said above, wait for the Ipad mini.
I wish I'd done that actually...

As long as you dont drill any holes or fiddle with the wires, you're fine.

I have an app called VFRNav, however this is only for Germany,Austria,and Switzerland.
It has all basic air navigation features, but I have not tried it out yet in the air. Maps are based on OpenStreetMap. I think it fits better on a kneepad than an iPad.

For those who don't know.....

The Nexus 7 was the generation of robots to follow the Nexus 6 (Blade Runner - replicant, I think they called them?) - If you are thinking of having Rachel (the only Nexus 7 built before her creator is killed by the Nexus 6s) navigate for you then......

replicants have 4-year life-span (no, I don't remember why). Rachel left at the end of the film with Harrison Ford... in 1982 so your 4-years are up.

Sad, really but it is clearly not going to work.

I use the nexus 7 and for me it works perfectly. I use the Garmin Pilot app. The size is good. It actually fits in one of the clear plastic pockets that gets sold for alot of the kneeboards, and it doesnt hamper with the touchscreen.

I thought that screen brightness would be an issue but at least for me its not a problem.

I would recomend it.

Don't forget that you need the cellular enabled iPad - the wifi only ones don't have GPS in them :ugh:

I have been using the 7" galaxy tab 2 with anywhere map and garmin pilot and had no issues with it. Quick sat pickup and had has worked great. Its also nice to have a/c checklists all on the tablet and all the manuals right there in pdf.

Considering buying a Nexus 7 too as a personal back up to aircraft's GPS. Has anyone used Android app called "Memory Map" in an Android device? Looks like quite a handy program, it's free for Android (basic maps included) and official VFR maps are 20 pounds / map. I'd need only four so 80 pounds + a device (159) that I'd probably need alsewhere too... Doesn't sound too expensive. Anyone?

If it's the same Memory Map software developing team as on the iPhone/iPad or Memory Map's own licensed 'Aviation GPS' hardware (which is completely useless and technical support even agree on the phone, stating it 'unfit for my purpose' - flying, with no offer of refund) then it's only any good as a moving map. You can't practically add routings on the device without using a pc, you can't easily even do a direct to, and even getting maps onto the device is harder that it's made out. Technical support is non-existent, and if you give them feedback to try and help they ignore it. For that same £80 you could get a years subscription to SkyDemon (after the more expensive initial year, and probably not on android). Perhaps MemoryMap have stepped up their game on Android, but others are making far more effort to create MUCH better products.

As a pure moving map showing your position with no on the go route functions it would work ok.

I am using AirNav Pro on an 7 In Samsung tablet and it works fine. Unfortunately it does not offer all the features of the IPAD version and I am not sure if it will in the near future.

On the German market there is also an very interesting NAV App for flying. It is called "VFRnav". It uses OpenAir data for its navigational database.
You can find this App in Google Playstore or under VFRnav - VFR Flugnavigation und Moving-Map für Android (http://www.flugbetrieb.com).

I am not sure if it works outside Germany, Austria and switzerland.
