I have just seen, at 12.40 BST today, 16/10/'12, over Godalming, Surrey, what looked like an Avro Anson. I could be wrong, as the last one I saw was probably about 1945; but judging by the sound and speed it was something of that vintage. Is there a preserved or restored Anson around anywhere?

What a lovely old plodder! Used, I think, for traning navigators during WW2, among other uses.

G-AHKX (Shuttleworth) and G-VROE (Classic Flight) are both airworthy in the UK. Some photos here: Oldprops Avro XIX/Anson (http://www.oldprops.ukhome.net/Anson%20Photographs.htm)

Ansons were in service at Bovingdon up to about'67 or '68.
According to Farnborough-aviation-group.co.uk - Login (http://www.farnborough.proboards.com) it's GAHKX operating out of Farnborough

Thanks for your replies, everyone, and for the photographs. Nice to know my recognition skills are not entirely dead. At my age it's just the modern stuff I can't identify.

From NZ Classic Air Photography

That looks like the best Anson restoration, by the same company that did the recent magnificent restored/copiedMosquito.

I can remember I had 2 Anson flights; Bovingdon - Benson and return (PH859) and Bovingdon - Tangmere and return (VL337). If I could find my 3822, I could tell you dates, but I'm pretty sure they were still in service until 1968, as you caught a glimpse of one right at the end of the film 'Mosquito Squadron' which was filming there in '68.
The last ones departed later that year on an airlift to Biafra.

I was on Mosquito Squadron and we went back and bought 4 Ansons [now is the admission of guilt....] and chopped them up for the Alvis Leonides engines which we used as wind machines......

The Anson had Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah engines

What engine did the later marks have, because they had circular x-section cowls/Townend Rings, not the beautful scallopped shape on the Mk 1

It was the Pembrokes which had Alvis Leonides engines.

Boy Entrants were taken for rides in Anson's for 'Air Experience Flights'.

My 1st two such flights were in Anson's at Lynham, 1952.

Of course every 'Station Flight' had an Anson or two.

I may be wrong, but I believe that only the early Mk 1 Ansons had the cowl with bumps (which were all the rage in the 1930s), including the Canadian-built ones.

On the other hand, the IWM at Duxford has a Mk 1 with the later smooth cowl, I don't know if that's original:

That statement is incorrect. To clarify:

The Anson MK1 MH120 restoration in the marking's of K6183 in the pic was done by owners Bill and Robyn Reid near Nelson (South Island). The Mosquito by AvSpecs at Ardmore (North Island).

Thanks Kluge'

I hang my head in abject shame, not only did I say Alvis Leonides instead of A/S Cheetahs

but I did Bill and Robyn Reid a huge disservice too! Humblest of apologies to the Reids!

These Senior Moments are getting too frequent!

There is a lovely video of the Anson's first flight here:
Avro Anson MKI maiden flight July 2012, Nelson, New Zealand. - YouTube

Annie also features prominently on the recent "Ardmore Mosquito Airshow" videos and photos.

Edited to add: Can someone tell me what "finned" aluminium object is at 1:48 in the video

Avro Anson Mk.11 had Jacobs engines, there were 1,832 of them built, 50 being supplied to the USAAC.
AnsonV were powered by Pratt and Whitney R-985-AN-12B engines. Numbers built, 1,050. I think the finned object is an oil cooler?

Pardon me for being picky, but the Anson Mk.11 (Mk.XI) isn't the same as the Anson Mk.II - it was the latter that had the Jacobs L-6 (R-755) engine.

Never in the field of human conflict have so many Anson experts been shot down by so few!

That's a nice shot you posted Dave Reid of the two RAAF Aggies staggering over Sydney Harbour with THE BRIDGE (or the car-strangled spanner) well in view.

That bridge has served as photographic backdrop to more planes than even Mount Rainier in Washington State. Possibly.

Comet and Concorde. Friendships and Fokkers of all marques and markings, 'Southern Cross' and Avro Tens onwards. A Lanc flew under her during WW11. Many Moths and Tiger Moths likewise.

Frank Wooten (aahhh) painted many a promo pic for the makers and the airlines using 'The Coathanger' and the most beautiful citified harbour in all the world to set the scene. (The fact I first saw light of day there does not mean I am unduly prejudiced biased or besotted. Much!)

It was a sad sad day when the last Sandringham departed that harbour in 1976 never to be seen in Australian skies again. The very first through service Australia to England departed the same waters in 1938, with the Qantas/Imperial Airways link and the glorious Empire boats.

Oil cooler, at a guess.
