One of the German airline's main rivals, Air France-KLM is also planning to make major changes to its European network, with plans to develop a low-cost unit called Transavia.

Hardly plans, that brand has been around for donkeys, even with the odd route like STN-RTM in the not too distant past.

Good old Auntie Beeb can't be bothered to get out of the comfortable chair.

So what exactly is new about the Lufty move anyway - merely bringing more services under the existing Germanwings banner, and maybe giving it a new name?

The Beeb, like everyone else, has to capture the fleeting eyebal. Something that says 'reallignment of exisiting services' does not grab. So they have to pretend it's new.

Just like govts that announce new funds several times.

Although media historians can correct me, this imperative was kicked into high gear in the modern era by CNN. of course, newspapers/radio/tv have always competed but CNN really changed the game around the world. 'Rolling news' means anything and everything MUSt be displayed. Irrespective of whether it is news or not.

True of the media in general, I'm afraid. Journalists would rather be spoon-fed press releases and regurgitate them without engaging their brains, let alone any critical/analytical faculties.

They already have Germanwings as a LCC. Why can't they just expand that?

Isn't that exactly what the plan is?

So Hamburg and part of Dusseldorf will end up looking rather more like Stuttgart...

Is this not simply bits of Lufthansa being moved to Germanwings, losing some excess along the way?

back in the day, journos were out on the streets chasing leads and sources. Today it's often a case of staying in the nice warm newsroom, scanning the wires and attempting to obtain information off the "interweb".

However, one thing hasn't changed: never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

The main reason they are in the office is Money. Companies don't want/don't have the money to pay for investigation and so they become reliant on 'the wires' and - now - crowd sourcing.

One of the problems is that the dmeands of 24 hr rolling news, has taken money away from the old fashioned 'foot plodding' research. Thus the spiral continues it's downward trend.
