thanks guys - but using the services of an agent (such as Rusaero/JSC) kind of sucks out the sportsmanship - doesn't it?

thats right, further especially rusaero is expensive as hell. but you will have very little to no chance to organize a flight permit for north korea on your own . the same is true for e.g uzbekistan , tajikistan etc. and i must say i never heard somebody tried this for a private flight - companies use here the agents stated above.
