Is this what we need, perhaps?

Any guesses on what airframe they might have in mind?

Boeing were involved with the design of the Sukhoi Superjet 100. With mountain spotting radar fitted it would fall into the medium bracket airframe. About 1000nm range. Ironic its basically Ruski.

I get the impression from that computer generated image in the link that it's more large Biz-Jet in size.

The 'dual sweep' of the leading edge is throwing me, id wise, at the moment, assuming it's not just a generic image rather than frame specific.

edit: Falcon 7X-ish?

It'll be a UAV.

Perhaps, but that's not what the piccy in the link suggests.

Unless the flight deck windows are for the benefit of the ground crew who service it.

I think you're right. Having read another link elsewhere, when they say 'medium sized', I think they are referring to a medium sized business jet.

I guess that as we are in the process of getting rid of one of those (Sentinel), we would not be in the market for this.

Flight had this story (http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/farnborough-boeing-offers-medium-maritime-surveillance-aircraft-to-international-customers-374133/) yesterday.

The aircraft, which Boeing officials say is based on a “super mid-sized business jet”, would leverage the best of the P-8’s technology. Boeing will not identify the exact type of aircraft, however, but will say it is a fairly large jet with high-bypass turbofans.

Wouldn't something like this be better?

Didn't General Dynamics and Convair do this last century?

Indeed, Japan is looking to make some money in the international arms market.

For another example, the Aussies have already made a visit to inspect the IJN's Soryu class subs with an eye for their Collins-class replacement program.

If Boeing still have the capability, then why not just dust off the 717-100x as a platform?

Why build "new" airframes.....why not just modify existing models of aircraft for the maritime role.....say the C-130. The trick to capability is numbers and availability of aircraft.

It has got to be cheaper to mod proven airframes than design-build-test-field new aircraft from scratch.

Subs are fast but even an old Herky Bird can keep up with them and with loads of fuel instead of cargo....could have the endurance to hang around for long periods of time.

Having that big ol' ramp on the rear end from which SAR rescue gear and SF Operations gear could be dropped would be a plus as well. Bring back aerial pickup equipment and it could be a really interesting airplane.

There was a new Swedish MPA demonstrator at Waddington and RIAT, don't have any further info on how good it is.

Am wondering how long the seedcorners will have in post once funding is officially denied for a new MPA?

Given AML's (DD/Avionics(RAF)) insistence in 1997 that C130 was fitted with Active Dipping Sonar, and his committal of rather large sums to procuring ADS LRUs and spares for C130, at least this idea has a head start. Only need to ensure the aircraft is stable in the hover...... :ugh:
