View Full Version : Red Tails

I've just dragged Mrs.G off to see Red Tails - the Lucasfilm take on the Tuskegee airmen story. And....

... I was pretty damned impressed. I'm sure a lot of it was CGI, but from the number of pilots in the credits clearly not all of it - and the merge was pretty seamless. Some really very impressive flying scenes, a reasonable stab at historical accuracy, and a more than reasonable stab at a decent storyline and some pretty good acting. Most of the aeronautics was about right too.

Not quite Battle of Britain but, to be frank, not very far behind and the best new aviation movie I can remember seeing since Apollo 13.

What has anybody else made of it?

A long time in the making, rather one-dimensional characters, not all that close to being historically accurate - although according to some reviews, cinema audiences believed it to be a documentary.

The only saving grace for me was the involvement of one G. Lucas and company.

Flying bits excellent, lots of good detail. However....

Dialogue and acting wooden and cliched. Ludicrous romantic sub plot. Could have been so much better as a film but will go down as a turkey. Makes Pearl Harbor look good.

Lucky lady. I hope she likes aeroplanes!

Some 'impossible' CGI flying shots. Why do they have to add dynamics that would pull the genuine article's wings off? Impossible CGI shots tell any viewer that the scene is unreal.
The trailer [2:15 - near the end] shot of the P-51 turning/colliding with an Me is a classic example of an impossible sequence.

Spoils it for me.

Also trailers that are recut to show action that doesn't appear that way in the movie should be scrapped IMHO.

Just me who liked it then.

Ah well.

If the movie is as bad as the dismal CGI trailer, it won't be as good as the low budget HBO movie The Tuskegee Airmen, which was excellent.

Red Tails seems to be getting, shall we just say, 'mixed reviews'....

Watched Redtails a couple of weeks ago and thought it was over the top Hollywood. I have also spoken with one of the original Tuskagee airman who said the characters are based on real people and alot of the events did take place but it is a lot of Hollywood most of the time.

From http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/magazine/george-lucas-red-tails.html?pagewanted=all

(Talking about young black Americans).

“They have a right to have their history just like anybody else does,” Lucas said. “And they have a right to have it kind of Hollywood-ized and aggrandized and made corny and wonderful just like anybody else does. Even if that’s not the fashion right now.”

Seems like most of the criticism, may be of GL achieving what he set out to achieve

Yorkie as Harvey always made us all titter - all the 1960's hair & make-up... They wouldn't have stood for all those curly locks at the time, but yes, she was a real cutie...:)
