The Comet made it's first scheduled flight from Heathrow to Johannesburg in May 1952. I think this was two years before the Boeing 707 made it's maiden flight.

Does anybody have any info about celebrations planned to commemorate this outstanding achievement?

The Dan-Air Staff Association and other Comet buffs, will be holding a dinner and other commemorative events at the RAF Museum Cosford on 2ndMay2002. Contact the D.A.S.A . at "Dolbybrook",Ifield Road,Charlwood, Surrey,RH6 0DR. or www.danair.webcentral.com.au for further info. Weather and committments permitting, DASA is working to provide some level of flying display featuring other fine De-Havilland products. For those who can get to RAF Cosford, it sounds like a wondeful commemoration of a fabulous aircraft.
