View Full Version : Engine failure en route over China this morning

Flying over Northern China in the wee small hours this morning I heard a very faint transmission (it's a huge area for one frequency). Here's what I managed to ascertain:

- I think it was Cathay 261. But I could be very wrong on that.
- maintained 8400 meters
- Engine failure
- Diverted off the airway because if they lost another engine they would descend further and would be in "big trouble"
- Controller kept pestering them to rejoin the airway.

Well done to the crew. The guy on the radio seemed cool and calm and handled the controllers complaints without getting frustrated. They also seemed very aware of their position (they deviated from the airway to get a more favourable MSA) and were not only thinking about what had gone wrong, but about the potential for other failures. This crew didn't appear to have blinkers on and were taking positive control of the situation.

Does anyone else have any more info (this is a rumours network after all!)
