Can you help?. .I am trying to research info on a particular Hurricane airframe! The ac in question is coded JU-P, of 111(F) Sqn. I do not have an ac serial number for this airframe, but I do know it existed circa 1938/39 and that it was a Mk1 with the metal wing and 2 bladed Watts prop. I have a picture of a tremblers Hurricane coded JU-P, but this one has the 3 bladed Rotol prop and I'm fairly convinced it's a MkIIa - this is not the ac I'm researching.. .If you are able to provide any hints/tips or pointers I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.. .P.S. I'll have an e-mail address set up ASAP; please post your reply on the forum 'till then. Thanks again.

The picture you have is a Mk I, as 111 squadron never received Mk II. According to the book Hurricane: the illustrated history by Philip J Birtles (ISBN 1-85260-604-5), by the start of the war 111 squadron had Hurricanes with 3 bladed props, the early a/c with Watts props (and Merlin II) having been withdrawn from service. Although some of these may have seen service in France with other squadrons, the a/c you are interested in was not with 111 squadron. Your best bet (if you're UK based) is to check squadron records at the Public Records Office at Kew, although contacting the squadron directly may help.

Thank you Mycroft. All gen gratefully received, and I'll have a shufti at the book you mentioned.. .I'm certain the ac I'm after existed around the time of the Munich Crisis, and was coded JU-P. Ideally I'm after a photo of it.. .As a matter of interest, 111 used the MkIIa around March-May '41 (could be out by a few months there, but anyway, just before they swapped over to Spit Mk V).. .p.s. e-mail address now up and running

Take a look here:. .. .http://www3.mistral.co.uk/k5083/main2.htm. .. .This chap is preparing the most comprehensive history of individual airframes I've seen. He may be able to help if you contact him.

The author's exact name eludes me, the surname was Mason, they wrote a book called 'The Hawker Hurricane'. The back half of the book contained the serial numbers and unit codes for most Hurricanes, maybe you might find it in there. I lost my copy a few years ago when I moved.. .. .Kermie
