A memorial bronze plaque to Guy Gibson VC was unveiled today in a simple ceremony at the Clock Tower Institute that stands proudly at the harbour entrance. The local ATC unit and RAF from St Mawgan provided a guard of honour, and many veterans from all services were in attendance.After the unveiling a pair of Hawks from RNAS Culdrose provided a suitable flypast.
The Porthleven/Gibson connection goes back to his early childhood and the fact that his mother came from Porthleven.
The cost of the plaque was raised by local efforts, that included proceeds from a series of film shows given by Mr Victor Stride that were always well attended. Mr Stride has produced a DVD of the show that includes both wartime interviews with Guy and rare shots of him around the harbour in his youth.
