Having switched from a company with a comprehensive benefits package to a being employed directly by an owner, I am now on a salary-only deal.

I presumed a standard worldwide travel insurance policy would cover me for medical expenses etc while away with the aircraft - but having just posed the direct question to my current insurer I am told they will not cover me as flight crew.

So any guys out there with insurers who cover flight crew as I don't fancy the arduous task of picking up the phone to each one to find out.

jonesymate I have PM'd you.

I have also spoken to my broker and he has told me that he is currently looking into this. At the moment he has been unable to find an insurer to offer this type of insurance, but he will let me know later and either way I will post the answer here. Hopefully it will be positive.

I'll join the band wagon. I spent several weeks going through insurance options, to be met by the telephone equivalent of a blank stare. As a contract pilot, working for long periods away, I felt a little exposed.

Chubb, Zurich and ACE are the top 3 UK corporate travel insurers. They may be able to supply a product for you?

Don't know if they do individual cover and I don't suppose they would be on comparethetravelinsurance.generic.website.com, but well worth a look

Good luck!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I have just had this reply, which I find surprising but there we are.

Dear Mr xxxxxxxxx Unfortunately I am unable to insure commercial pilots for travel insurance. I have approached a dozen providers with no joy!
Sorry I could not be of assistance on this occasion but thank you for your recommendation.

Richard White They can help with cabin crew if that is of use to anyone. I am going to contact another broker re flight deck crew..

Question : Why are pilots such a bad risk?

If you are with BALPA there is a scheme through Clarke Roxburgh

Thanks for the input thus far.

I presumed leaving my previous warm cosy benefits package behind would be of little consequence but it appears this may not be the case. I would rather not rely on the assumption that the boss will pick up the bill - that said, I have a clutch of corporate credit cards so don't intend to find myself in immediate dire-straits should the worse occur.

BALPA have pretty much sod all to offer me beyond this link with Clarke Roxburgh, and 1% seems an awful lot to give away on top of what is now likely to be a fairly highly loaded non-standard insurance policy.

I have a few avenues I am looking into and will report back if I am successful - seems odd that we are excluded as a professional group and clearly there is demand for such policies.
