Having put some USEFUL aps on my Android phone, I got a 'short on memory' warning, so after moving what I can to the memory card I've been cleaning up my phone and taking off the cr*p I never use.

This is all stuff on the phone 'as it came' and includes Facebook, Tw*tter, and so on. As might be expected, the 'remove ap' box is greyed-out on factory/provider-installed software.

Anyone know a work-around for this ?

Root the phone, then you can delete whatever you want.

The phone supplier will probably invalidate any warranty, but there are many many rooted phones out there that still work ok.

Some rooted phones are paperweights:{

As ZH says, root the phone and then use something like Super Manager to delete the guff you don't want/need. Of course, rooting the phone also means you can add things like an ad blocker which has an obvious appeal.

Of course, you can go further like I have and install a whole new modified operating system which means I don't have the pre-installed crud, I have more features AND my battery life is longer.

All depends on how brave you are.........
