Alright, I can remember Air India serving Australia at least twice before. Pulling out of the market at short notice and then re-launching flights again a couple of years later. They have form for this. Some of our elder statesmen on here may be able to fill in the years.

The article linked by hotnhigh confirms a figure I heard on CNN last week - 5 out of 6 Indian carriers reported losses last year and, overall, Indian aviation lost $3 billion last year. Yes, it sounds like a great market for Jetstar to get into (but I imagine QF International losses will increase again shortly afterward).

I despise the leprechaun that tries to run our outfit (into the ground), but at the last Senate hearing he made a valid point. He said that the WORLD'S entire aviation industry will make $6 billion profit this year - that's LESS than just ONE of Australia's four biggest banks. That is insane!!

Everybody wants to fly, but no-one wants to pay for it! Should airlines be re-regulated and re-nationalized? Everyone wants to fly but more and more, airlines are unable to make a decent return. The AirNZ results said that their profit was affected by natural disasters, high fuel prices and an INABILITY TO RAISE FARES!!?! What will it take to make this industry sustainable? Planeloads of cabin crew and tech crew from East Africa on $100 US a month?? Every fourth or fifth flight crashing because of badly paid, seriously disengaged and unmotivated pilots?

Every airline talks about wanting to open itself up to foreign investment, but seriously, who would be stupid enough to invest large slabs of cash in a major airline in the current climate? Maybe it's time we all just pay Emirates whatever it wants to become Emirates Australia, Emirates New Zealand, Emirates India or whatever.

Please forgive my ignorance, but year 10 commerce taught me that if a business was not profitable it would not be able to pay expenses, and therefore would have to close.

If (pretty much) all airlines are losing money, how are they still operating. If all the airlines are bitching that they cant operate at these fair levels why don't they RAISE prices.

I remember buying lamb cutlets in the 90s for 60c each. Now they are around 5x times that! People are still buying lamb, the market adapted.

Why doesn't aviation do the same? :ugh::ugh::ugh:

And therein lies the problem.

In the mid-70s, a return airfare to Europe was around $2000: now it's ....... $2000! Of course, $2000 bought a hell of a lot more 40 years ago.

Today, cheaper is better and that's the whole ballgame. So the last airline left standing has won the game .... just before it goes broke. It's a ridulous situation and a ridiculous industry. Time for governments, bankers and IATA to get involved, or we will just see the accident rates of the 50s return as more and more airlines risk going to the wall unless they cut their margins (including safety and training) to the absolute limit.

It’s that time of the month again. Aerospace Diary learns pilots of ailing Kingfisher Airlines have threatened not to come to work from tomorrow March 1, if the backlog of their 3-month salary is not cleared.

We also hear the airline is caught again with dues yet to be paid to IATA. This follows a recent default when Kingfisher had come close to being blacklisted by IATA for non payment.

Bad luck seems to come in 3 or 4s for the airline. An official told Aerospace Diary lessors are demanding the return of two AOGs, not under proper care. It is not clear if they are A330s or A320s. If the former, it could be likely the carrier’s operations to London and Hong Kong could be hit badly. Already, Kingfisher counters are manned with a skeleton staff taking care of a handful of passengers.

Is the media to blame for this as Vijay Mallya’s recent note to his employees claim, one wonders.

with a margin of 0.6%

ie... $6 from each $1000 ticket !!!

Didn't Jetstar try SIN-BLR or SIN-CCU some years back and fail?

Anyhow the yields to and from India now are horrendous. Coupled with a plunging rupee and intense competition, all the airlines are in a price war on India-SIN routes.

When Indigo entered BOM-SIN last year, SQ increased its frequency from 14 to 17 weekly and will at the end of the month go to 21 weekly. The prices fell from (all up) US$600, then $500, then $450, and SQ seems to have stabilised at $400 and Indigo is putting out a $350 fare. It was only a matter of time before QF threw in the towel really.

Same for DEL-SIN. Look up the J fares for DEL-SIN, they're about US$2000 return on SQ.

There's a very easy solution to crew calling in sick on India flights. What SQ does is, if you call in sick for an India flight, you will be rostered on the same flight the following week.

Isn't this agreement about Jetstar doing on carriage for JET airways from SIN to Oz?
So Jet airways will be be flying the India to SIN sectors and Jetstar will just fly its normal sched SIN to Oz.
I can't see how this can cause Indian crews to fly the Jetstar aircraft. There is nothing to see here, move on.

Does anyone have a reference to this? Here's the exact quote taken from the Hansard report of the hearings. I have misquoted him slightly in that $6 billion was last year's result - this year's will be worse!!

Mr Joyce : It is fair to say that these restrictions, as we have already said, would be unique to Qantas as an Australian company and would put restrictions on us that no other Australian companies would have to abide by. It seems crazy in one of the most competitive industries in the world. The total profitability of the aviation industry worldwide last year was $6 billion, which is less than an Australian bank made, and that is for the whole industry. This year it is going to be half of that. To make a profit in this highly competitive industry is to do exceptionally well. To have restrictions on Qantas and have it not able to compete on a level playing field with the rest of the world's aviation is crazy, and it will condemn Qantas to failure.
