SYDNEY AIRPORT'S chief executive, Kerrie Mather, has insisted that the airport has the ability to cope with increased demand for flights until at least 2050, despite the federal government stating repeatedly a second airport is needed urgently for the city.

The country's largest airport is attempting to garner support for a makeover planned for the next eight years that would remove the split between the domestic and international terminals.

Ms Mather said the plans were aimed at improving the airport's ability to meet capacity increases through measures such as using the same gates for both domestic and international flights.

''Being able to use the same gates for domestic and international is getting more productivity out of the existing [airport],'' she said.

''We have looked out to 2050 as part of a new vision [and] there is plenty of capacity then.''

But her comments fly in the face of those from the federal Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese, who last week reiterated the need for a second airport and insisted Sydney Airport was struggling to cope with extra demand, especially at peak times. ''Sydney does need a second airport, sooner rather than later,'' he said.

He is due to release shortly a report into Sydney's future aviation needs, which is expected to recommend an increased use of Bankstown and Richmond airports as secondary airports for spillover flights.

Ms Mather said many of the airport's options for expansion had been exhausted under its existing master plan, whereas its latest proposal would give more room for capacity increases beyond 2019.

''It is making more of what we have got through a reconfiguration,'' she said.

The airport's ability to cope with extra demand would also be aided by an accelerating trend of airlines using larger aircraft such as Airbus A380s, she said. In the past decade, the airport's passengers had increased 40 per cent yet aircraft movements had remained static.

But Ms Mather would not comment on whether a second airport was needed, saying it was a ''matter for government''.

Sydney Airport reported a 2 per cent rise in pre-tax profit to almost $791 million for the year to December 31, despite what it described as a ''challenging environment''. But the company, formerly known as MAp Airports, posted a bottom-line loss of $240 million, compared with a $101 million profit a year earlier, which reflected an asset swap involving the transfer of stakes in Copenhagen and Brussels airports in return for a larger slice of Sydney Airport.

Ms Mather said the investment fund remained keen on increasing its stake in Sydney Airport beyond its existing 85 per cent stake if the opportunity arose at the right price.

The airport also disclosed that Ms Mather earned a total salary package of $3.4 million, which included a short-term bonus of about $1.5 million, last year.

It was a slight increase on 2010.

If there is up to 20-30 minutes of holding how on earth does she expect to increase capacity. Very few airlines fly A380s and you cannot fly 777/744 SYD-MEL. Changing the gates around is fine, but the issue is aircraft movements.

It is concerning that both YSSY and YPPH airports are at gridlock yet their CEOs are continuing with public statements of how no infrastructure is necessary and their airports can handle expansion with their current facilities. Both airports are at capacity now and any increase in flights will only cause more pain.

I dont know of any other business which is essentionally dysfunctional yet the CEOs think they just keep expanding and everything is fine.

YPPH needs a new runway, YSSY needs a ATC procedures/rules/SID/STAR/cap/curfew review. Plus more terminals.

I don't see how either could possibly expand without pushing airborne hold times beyond 30-45 minutes. I do not understand how Kerrie Mather thinks she can expand SYD when it is at capacity right now.....

That is because they are delusional kretins that are only there to line their pockets.

Blind Freddy could tell you that both airports needed to invest in infrastructure ten years ago.

How is it the people get these positions and then achieve nothing?

The world is a sad sad place, greed and ineptitude has taken over from pride, hard work and smarts.

Simple really, it will have to adopt a LHR style approach and basically do away with the 'small' operators to free up slots for the 'heavies' which carry more passengers for the same amount of movements. That will increase the passenger numbers through the terminals so they can build more retail space, sell more crap and increase the profits and the executive salaries. Only ones to miss out will be the bread and butter small operators, but who cares about the local aviation operators when there is money to be had!!

That would work well if we had a secondary airport. Other than that I think all they can do is force new operators into unfavourable slot times assuming there is no change in the political will in regard to curfews and movement caps.

Our country has become a laughing stock. SYD is a pony poo airport which requires relocation and billions to be spent.
Queensland Bruce Hwy - the lifeblood of the state is a third rate pony poo transport corridor. Two examples only.

While politicians engage in dick measuring games our country, which as Swanny keeps reminding us 'rode out the financial storm of 2008' slips further toward third world status.

$791 million profit for an airport hey, plus $3.5 mill for the CEO, might be time SYD became 'super taxed', then that crying fool Albanese can put some of that profit back into the airport.

This coming from an airport authority that takes two months to replace an ILS on 34L!!! It's an absolute disgrace how these people run this airport, if we were to work out what it's cost the airlines in delays and lost slots it would cause the bean counters to have a heart attack!!

While we have politicians like Albo with no balls or vision this airport will be joke. In full VMC days we are delaying aircraft for no other reason then we might exceed 80 movements an hour. A number that was plucked out of thin air years ago and means nothing to no one, hell we only find out weeks later when it's exceeded!!

This country needs to get smarter with the ways we do things otherwise we will be well and truly left behind.
