View Full Version : Loudest Bizjets

The US has just passed legislation banning stage 2 bizjets and private aircraft from 2016.

I gather such aircraft would include RR Viper powered Hawkers, RR Spey power G2's. What others would make the list. Are there many still active?

Interestingly, it seems prop aircraft are starting to generate more and more noise complaints. Are there any that are really loud, or is it peoples complaint threshold is being lowered after years of much quiter aircraft.

What is depressing, is the selfishness of people who live around an airport. A local residents action group round the airport i operate out of are trying to ban all late might.........MEDIVAC flights.

You'll struggle to beat the NA Rockwell Sabreliner for noise:ok:

Learjet 23/24/25 series sadly will be banned. Hearing those CJ-610 engines screaming on takeoff sounds like music in my ears.

G III seems as loud as G II to me. I see some G IIIs have "hush kits" now. Not sure how much "hushing" is really going on.

What about the old airliners like Travolta's 707? Will this be grounded too?

As far a loud prop planes I always seem to notice the Piaggio Avanti's noise. Much louder than other prop planes.

Travolta's 707 has Stage III hushkits installed. Other old airliners might be in trouble.

What an awesome piece of kit - you can feel the rumble through the ramp several hundred feet away

Of more relevance to me on the ramp is APU noise - the Falcon 2000 APU is bloody earsplitting. G200 aint quiet either. Seems to be the way they are mounted as much as the APU itself.

And running them for more than 30 minutes is fairly antisocial (but then I would say that as I fly a Lear 40)

Well, G-SPOT, parked my kite next to a 1-11 in September 2011...in Ouagadougou / Burkina Faso (DFFD). They sadly did not depart before us, so couldnīt hear the noise. But I remembers BA 1-11s sound very well...although I think you rather feel the noise than hear it.

The Beechjet 400 has a real nasty noise btw.

I concur.
Quiet airfield, over looking the Med, beautiful sunny day.
Pierced by an APU on for 2 hours.

If you want to keep your aircraft cool so you can watch a snide DVD...then use the crew room...or does your antisocial behaviour with the APU also mean that you are unable to converse with other pilots also?

1-11 at full chat...you can feel it in your chest cavity...Nice.

Hawker 400 is surprisingly loud, Hawker 800 also.
One of the loudest jets that I hear on a regular basis is the Fokker 100 with it's Speys.
Saw an Il-62 takeoff last week, that was quite something.

TU.134 in Moscow, I love the T/O noise and spot miles away the fumes before the aircraft gets insight. I love DC-8 and B727 engine noise.

LR-28 (cj610-8), G-II(if straight pipe speys), those are the loudest that i can think of.

"Without question, Convair 990"

Was there a 990 used as a biz jet? Just asking....

About the 990 I don't know, but Elvis had an executive 880 named "Lisa Marie"!

I also have very fond memories of an executive BAC 1-11 belonging to a car manufacturer in the UK. We were parked next to them on a cold day in a Cessna 421 (around 1993 or so) at a regional airport with no facilites whatsoever and the crew had pity with us and invitied us aboard for tea and biscuits. One of the prettiest aircraft ever built and I still can feel the earth shake when they took off :)

Unsure whether it would meet your definition of "bizjet", but yes, Nomads Travel Club out of Detroit operated a CV-990.

I had an opportunity once to fly a G-II without the "cookie cutter" hush kit on it, the engine was Stage I. I swear we broke a few windows lifting off out of Bogota. That thing was a regular rocket once it got airborne though. I'd say loudest is hands down a heavy G-II with tip tanks just because it'll be lower. The G-II, G-IIB, and G-III all have the Spey 511-8 engines so they should sound similar.

Really anything with the old Rolls Royce engines will be loud. The screaming Darts are distinct and loud too. Other than that for more modern turoprops I'd say an MU-2.

A GIII is quieter than a GII, because the exit nozzles are different. The original "cookie cutters" on the GII were loud as heck. Taking off from Aspen on a cold winter morning sounded like the space shuttle lifting off.

The original GII's were a stage one aircraft. I once sent an email to the airport manager of an airport known to dislike noise after 11PM, stating that I was not subject to his rules as I wasn't a stage II aircraft.... He was unamused.

Well, that was the technology available those days. I flew the B733 200. It was noisy. Then I flew the Beechjet 400A. Both were wonderful planes to flybut for some reason I think people on ground didn't agree with me. Specially at night.
