Overall/complete cost of your PPL

Greetings

Wondering if people on this board can tell me how much they paid in total for their UK PPL from start to finish, all lessons, dual and solo, (but not including the examinations, or equipment).

Also, what area they did it in. (I realise that individual schools cannot be named, but perhaps areas can).

Any answers would be appreciated - I'm trying to work out a UK average price for the licence, (to see if I'm being overcharged!)

I paid £82/hour and it took me 76 hours, quick calculation = £6232, worth every penny.

I paid £75/hr took 45 hrs. £3375
Books......................£50
Exams......................£189
Medical....................£75
CRP1.......................£30
Charts/Pens................£20

I can't remember what the test fee and tickes issue cost I think about £400.

So about £4139 give or take a few quid. You might be able to save on second hand books and CRP1.

The flying costs were from last spring so you may wish to add a few quid for inflation.

I'm ashamed to say, nearly £8,000

Due to a few reasons:-

1 Changed schools 4 times
2 Had 16 months off flying
3 No excuses - I'm probably a slow learner!

£2635 for 31 hours flying at £85 per hour

The first 20 hours i did for free, courtesy of the RAF flying scholarship scheme. So technically for 51 hours flying it worked out as £51-52 per hour

I paid only £1800 for 24 hours instruction on the PA-28, all equipment, examinations, fees, accomodation, flight test etc, and included a NR.

Like El Keefo, my other 21 hours came from an RAF FS.

The school can be named, I have nothing to do with them, but was incredibly impressed. They are Clas Air, they operate the PA-28 based at Prestwick International. If you want their number drop me a mail.

It's not just the cost per hour you need to work out, I've paid nearly £900 in landing fees and I've not finished yet!

£3500 all in, including 52 hrs, all tests/exams, RT course, all equipment and a headset (and 12 nights accom.) Flying PA-38's, in mid Wales. Bargin me thinks. ;)

JAA PPL - £4,500 for 62.5 hours, 1 months accomdation in Longbeach and two flights to LA.

Also came away with an FAA PPL (tied into restrictions on UK PPL though!)

Not finished yet (just started nav training) but done about 40 hours so far, and my flight school has just put its costs up, so....

36 hours at £96 per hour - £3,456
4 hours at £99 per hour - £399
landing fees so far - say £325
books - £54
flight computer - £43
map, protractor, etc - £55
class 2 medical - £130
something a lot of people forget about, petrol (to get to the airfield) - say £135 so far.

Total, say about £4,597, and I have more or less the whole of nav training to go, all the written exams, and the CAA fees.

On top of that you can add the £400 I'm about to part with for my class 1 medical in a couple of weeks.

And to think I could be spending my money on wine, women and song....

Mr El keefo, as i remember you still cant fly at 51H, but the time in Perth was a hoot.
Dont forget to tell everyone how much you paid the flying school to pass u first time. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
