Found this big lady (AN124) at YPPH Wednesday night while picking up family from the int. terminal... pretty impressive machine, sadly I had no decent camera with me just my blackberry.
Wonder if anybody here has ever had the chance to spent some time in one of its front seats? Do they fly as they look?

Someone tell me if im remembering incorrectly, but I have a feeling I've seen some footage from Canberra's tower of that thing barely making it off the ground by the keys at the far end and not exactly climbing out too well.

( just found it on google under Russian aircraft departing Australia. Anyone with the ability to post the link should do as its pretty funny!)

There is a world of difference in performance between an IL 76 (Canberra) and an Antonov 124 frequently in W.A. due to mining boom.

Ask and you shall receive. The commentary alone is worthy of an Academy. :E

A bloke who had jump seated on an AN-124 several times (cargo agent) told me that they can't climb on three engines, so if they lose one on takeoff it's curtains for the big bird. If anyone's got better info feel free to correct me.

I also heard from someone else that that's why they have to do a high power run on the runway for some minutes prior to departure, so that 1. they're warmed up and 2. if anything goes boing it's better to have it go boing on the ground. This tends to make them unpopular with the large queue of departing domestic 737s that invariably builds up behind them. :ouch:

Awesome aircraft, always impressive to watch either on landing or takeoff. :ok:

That is some golden commentary..
How is the climb after lift off ... Bloody hell. That would be a sphincter clenching moment if ever I saw one..

Yes Mr maehhh,

It was still at the Int Terminal on Fri. Morn (27th) at 0930 or so.
As T28D says it is 'not a novelty' here anymore.....

But nice to watch and listen to.....Different!!
And that's a nice shot anyway!!!

Cheers:ok:

Haha the IL 76 video is a classic! :ok:

@FSO GRIFFO

Oh damn I didn't consider it would stay longer than a night... I'd loved to see it leaving...

Was at MAKS the russian airshow last year . They had a An124 and a Cri Cri in the same display . A very odd couple :ok:

I love this big Ruski hardware! It's been a while since Ive seen an AN-124 in Sydney though. If you think the IL-76 is scary, try a few flights in an MI-26!
