View Full Version : Airlines no longer operating

Looking at all of the Airlines I have flown on, I noticed that the vast majority of them are no longer operating. Perhaps I'm a jinx on the aviation industry !! My list for anyone who is interested;

Air Ferry, BKS Air Transport, British Eagle, Trans Union, Channel Airways, Air Spain, British United Airways, all of whom have ceased ops. Monarch (still operating), Skyways Coach Air, BOAC (still operating as BA), Ansett, TAA (now part of Qantas), Pan-Am, American Airlines (still operating), Air New Zealand (still operating), BCAL, British Airways (still operating), MAS (still operating), Arkia (still operating), Air Bridge Carriers (now Air Contractors), Aer Mediterranean, Britannia (now Thomsons), Altair, Air Europe, Sunstate (now part of Qantas), Flight West, Majestic Airways, Garuda (still operating), Easyjet (still operating), Spanair (still operating), Onurair (still operating), Flybe (still operating), Manx2 (FLM Aviation & Vanair) (still operating).

So, a hefty percentage that I've flown on have ceased. Anyone else like to add their details just out of interest.

I think for many of us, naming all those we've flown on would just become a long boring list and end up as willy-waving contest.

A few I've flown on that no longer exist are :

Flitestar (ZA)
Nationwide (ZA)
Air Cape (ZA) (absorbed by SAA)
CAA (Rhodesia) (split into 3)
Air Rhodesia (became Air Zimbuggered)

BCAL (GB)
DanAir (GB)
Laker Airways (GB)
PanAm

PSA (US)

Don't forget that the mere fact they're not operating is not in itself always a bad thing.

Ths loss of Dan and particularly B. Cal and Go is tragic and much to be lamented, the loss of grubby little operations like Debonair and one half (the Western half) of Virgin Express is probably of great benefit to aviation. Pan Am and TWA were landmarks in sadness at the demise of historic names though also in chronic mismanagement, yet there are also dreadful companies still surviving that have no right to.

C'est a vie.

In the entrance to the Airport Hilton* at Dorval (Montreal), there's a wall built of rocks each one from an airlines' home area & with the contributing airlines' name etched into the surface. With a couple of exceptions, I doubt any of the airlines are still flying including Allegheny, Mohawk, Braniff, Piedmont & Wardair.

Remember all that has gone is normally just the business structure of the relevant operator. The routes carry on with someone else unless they are quite unworthwhile, the airframes carry on to new duties elsewhere unless nobody wants them.

I remember, for example, that great service by Wardair on charter flights from the UK to Canada, partially aided by the excitement of flying transatlantic which none of my schoolmates had done. Well Wardair have gone, and it gets more "what a shame" comments than most from those who remember it. But in its place I have two (soon to be three) daily scheduled carriers London to Vancouver where I can choose what days I like rather than having to build the year's holiday plan around a handful of charter flights arranged at least 6 months beforehand. Everyone I know has now made it to North America, generally multiple times (I've done two round trips in one week). Compared to inflation, fares are now the same, or cheaper, on the scheduled operators. I can hop over for the weekend without it costing a month's salary. That's all worth way more than some nicely served drinks (and BA is about the same with these too).

As far as the standards of some of those IT operators to the Mediterranean are concerned (including a number mentioned above), than goodness they have gone.

Not forgetting Air Safaris.
Air Safaris Limited was formed on 26 November 1959 with four-engined Handley Page Hermes and twin-engined Vickers Vicking airliners to operate scheduled and charter flights based at London Gatwick Airport. Originally started as Meredith Air Transport in 1952 as a Dakota operator it changed name in November 1954 to African Air Safaris Limited and in 1956 bought a Handley Page Hermes from the British Overseas Airways Corporation. It acquired two Vikings in 1959 and with a move to Gatwick Airport became Air Safaris When the company ceased operations on 2 November 1961 it had five Hermes and eight Vikings.

BAF - British Air Ferries hasn't been mentioned yet; it deserves to be if only as an metaphor for how dodgy an airline can be if the owner knows what he is doing, as he did.

Its welcome demise marked the end of a lucrative source of additional income for CAA staff who suffered temporary loss of sight and hearing when necessary. Perhaps only to be replaced, of course. Who knows.......?

I think Canadian was the successor to Canadian Pacific (CP).

Who was the airline that operated car carriers across the channel from Kent (Lydd?) to somewhere in northern France - it might have been Le Touquet. They were big ugly front loading things. Was it BAF that someone has already mentioned?

Found one : Photos: Aviation Traders ATL-98 Carvair Aircraft Pictures | Airliners.net (http://www.airliners.net/photo/British-Air-Ferries/Aviation-Traders-ATL-98/1917941/&sid=8522afadef88ce2f6eeeb7a529f7aaf5)

No one seems to have mentioned Mediterranean Express which operated a BAC 1-11/475 out of Luton for about six months in 1987. They still owe me a month's salary. I realised that things were a bit unsure when the accountant stood at the bottom of the steps on one of the last flights and collected a bundle of cash from the charterer.

The aircraft was ex Fawcett of Peru. Another was obtained and flown back to Luton but it never operated.

Who was the airline that operated car carriers across the channel from Kent (Lydd?) to somewhere in northern France - it might have been Le Touquet.
This went through several iterations of name. Started in the 1950s as Silver City Airways, operating from Lydd to Le Touquet, while a competitive servce was started by Freddie Laker's original company Air Charter's as subsidiary Channel Air Bridge from Southend to Calais and Ostend. Both later expanded elsewhere as well. Both had the Bristol Freighter as their mainstream fleet, but Laker then did some home-made rebuilds of DC4s as the Carvair.

The two carriers got merged up, along with several other airlines, into British United Airways, and the combined operation was branded as such, then the car services was renamed as British United Air Ferries (BUAF), and the Cravars covered both departure points. The market fell away substantially each year as new car-ferry ships came into service, and finally the operation was sold off as British Air Ferries (BAF), which ultimately got out of the cross-channel business altogether and went on to be a major ACMI charter operator.

Worked for them for a few years after thinking that F27's were a step up from B99's at TAT, which is another to add to the list....Should have stayed put, as I was still flogging around on the F27 when my mates were working on shiny, newish F28's and, I believe, but I'm open to correction here, wearing shiny, newish BA uniforms....

Worked in SIN in the early nineties, I remember Air Swazi Cargo which used to fly betwegen SIN and MTS, Manzini in Swaziland. This routing was neccessary to get around the embarago which was in force against South Africa at the time.

This flight was operated back-to-back with the Air Hong Kong (pre CX), some of the load was transloaded in SIN and that was how South Africa got its VCRs in the bad old days.

Air Swazi Cargo - a/c were 3d-ASC and ASB. Two letter airline code was GK.

Air Hong Kong operated VR-HKK and HKL and if I am not mistaken HKG as well. Two letter code was LD and airline number was 288.

Brown air (seriously)
Based Leeds/Bradford.

Yep,

Brown Air with their Gulfstream 1, chartered it on a number of occasions, then they became Capital Airlines with a small fleet of Sheds, they took Air UK on, head to head, on the Leeds Belfast route whilst taking out full page ads in the Yorkshire Post slating off Air UK claiming that their Sheds were quicker and superior to Air UK's Fokkers ..... Air UK simply reduced their fares on the route to a level that Capital couldn't compete with and the rest is history.

Here's another one:

How about this lot ... Ryanair bought them out to commence Ryanair's UK based operations ... If only we'd known at the time :)

And then there were this mob, allegedly the only mob mad enough to put BAC1-11's thru GCI ... I worked with the former chief pilot, it's rumored they wore brown underpants for GCI operations :)
