PA Pensions and FTRS

I left 5 years ago after 28 years Service as a PA Sqn Ldr (level 30 I think) and am considering applying for a FTRS position.

Would my final salary be adjusted to allow for the flaying pay part?

That is, the new post is for Sqn Ldr and I am wondering if my pension will be abated.

Basic Sqn Ldr pay + My Pensiion = <Than I was earning when I left.

Any help/advice most welcome.

The abatement is applied to ensure that your FTRS salary plus pension at start of contract does not exceed your final regular salary, uplifted to current value by applying inflation adjustment. For me, it was significant that flying pay is not part of the calculation, so I actually gained by coming back to a higher rate of flying pay. However, I was never PA, so I don't know how that comparison works.

Flying pay does not count towards abatement. Also, as you were PAS then you will have a higher ceiling than a General List Sqn Ldr before you reach abatement levels with your pension. You would start off on the last level that you stopped on when you were a General List Sqn Ldr (unless you were promoted as PAS or Spec Aircrew then I would guess that you would start on the top level). The other thing to consider is that your maximum salary before abatement starts would be your last day as PAS plus 5 years of index-linked inflation increases - that would also give you a bit more headroom.

Finally, if you have access to Dii or know someone that can, then there is a Reserves Admin Instruction section on the RAF Intranet "Publications" web page. It will tell you all about the process of how to get in and also spells out the likely questions you will be asked.

I became RAFR about 4 months ago and it fits my personal circumstances so much better than Regular Service was. It's the best of both worlds when it's time to grow up - that's how I view it anyway!

PS Just check you're not on AFPS05 as there are some funny rules surrounding this and EDPs. Have a look at the link to the DIN at Para 10. Also you will start accruing a new pension under RFPS05 which is 1/70th of your final salary for every year you work plus 3 times the final annual pensionable amount tax free. Also, if you retire at below age 60 then the pension is held in abayance until age 65, but if you retire at age 60 or above then you get an immediate pension. Finally, FTRS have just been given the nod that they can work to age 65 if fitness is maintained - Dad's Army, here we come, can I be Private Godfrey?!! :}

Guys, thank you for your prompt replies, most helpful. I think that the 5 elapsed years since I left and the fact I was PAS (I stayed on the 1975 Pension scheme) should mean I'm 'Golden'.

I wouldn't! I had no choice as my contract was cancelled and I can't quite afford to fully retire just yet. Belive me, as soon as I can I'll off ("Like a rat out an aqueduct").

PA level 30 and can't afford to retire, you must have been leading a very good life till now :ok:

PA level 20 here, finishing later this year and will be retiring straight away, never to work again :D:D:D
