What wonderful times......

It's only when you see such films that you realise what a truly appalling state the RAF is in today.....:uhoh:

I was posted, as an instructor (telegraphist), to 3 Maritime HQ, RAuxAF in 1970 after spending 3 years attached to 24 (Airportable) Infantry Brigade. My boss refused to believe that the RAuxAF was still in existence but upon enquiring discovered that 1, 2 and 3 MHU were still going strong. I retired from 3 MHU in 1973.

Back in the '80s there was talk of reforming 609 (County of West Riding) Sqn RAuxAF, to operate Wessex in support of the Army. I was based at Leeds/Bradford, flying the F27 for AirUK, and held a commission in the VR(T) as an Air Experience pilot, flying Chipmunks from Leeming. I had flown the Wessex in the regular Air Force, and envisaged the perfect flying combination of F27, Chipmunk and Wessex, being paid for one and getting the other two for free. Sadly, like so many things in life, it never came to pass.

Well, 609(WR) Sqn has re-formed, but as a non-flying unit - Air Defence Support Sqn formed in 1998, and got the numberplate in (ISTR) 2000. Did Op Telic, and has personnel currently supporting Op Herrick, mostly Gunners.

Tally Ho! :ok:
