another urban myth. It happened, but the assailant wasn't as badly damaged

see snopes.com: Stabbed Marine (http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/stabbedmarine.asp)

That's a shame, I enjoyed that. I wish I'd been left with the feel good lie.

In the real world incident the guy got life in prison. American justice is severe indeed.

Wonder how many months he'd have gotten, say, in Germany?

In UK he would be classified as the victim and be making outrageous claims for compensation.

ross_M.

In many states of the US there is what is called "repeat offender" laws.

These vary, but the basic structure is that if an individual has multiple felony (serious) convictions, then on the 3rd (or 4th) such conviction he/she is automatically sentenced to life imprisonment as "incorrigible"... not capable of becoming a law-abiding member of society.

Some states allow for lesser crimes to count towards the total as long as at least 1 of the convictions is for a "crime of violence" or for drug trafficking.

If this individual was sentenced to life, this is almost certainly the reason, as the most he could be charged with would be attempted murder or assault with a deadly weapon.

These normally carry around a 15-20 year sentence... with parole possible much earlier "for good behavior" while imprisoned and if the parole board assesses him as "unlikely to re-offend".

In the UK it is proposed to do something similar, (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15464874) but my thoughts are that hell will freeze over before that happens.

I wrote to the Minister responsible for prisons complaining about the excellent conditions that prisoners have to endure

I was told in no uncertain terms that it was the responsibility of all prisons to 'reform' not to punish!!!

Our old age pensioners may freeze to death in winter, but perish the thought if our prisoners cannot have their cable TV.

What isn't an urban myth is the story of a smart alec who gobbed off and engaged 2 trannies in fisticuffs in Swansea's main piss up street. They were 2 cage fighters on a night out! The trannies were not hurt in the making of the video.

It's on ewe tube somewhere but I can't do the linky thing.

Some 15 or so years ago, a couple of Eastern European youths came off decidedly 2nd best, and didn't get what they thought they would :E when the 70+ year man they thought would be an easy target to mug as he came out of a Dover pub one night, was in fact, a still very fit and alert, battlehardened veteran WW2 German Fallschirmjäger who had jumped at Crete, seen action on the Eastern Front and finally Italy before becoming a British POW and like, fellow famous ex-Fallschirmjäger, Bert Trautmann, settled here in the UK after release.

I dread to think what is going on but I guess in this age of 'Don't ask, don't tell; I guess it is none of our business.

Swansea looks like an awful place.

Wind (as in wind-up) Street after dark Friday and Saturday is a pit, but Swansea's not bad, as places go. I suspect it wouldn't make the Booze Capitals of the UK Top 20.

You'll never guess where we have to stay when covering the South Wales Air Ambo as floaters, then. First went on Christmas Day 2007; thought I'd been teleported to Newcastle when I saw the denizens of the dreaded Wind St while trying - unsuccessfully - to find somewhere for a meal.
