Dear fellow ppruners.

A friend of mine has the problem of the mozilla browser not starting at all. I ask her to remove it and re-install it but she is concerned about loosing all the book marks.

Any ideas on either to manage to open the browser or save the "favorites" and re-install it.

Many thanks.

Rwy in Sight.

Depending on version either 'bookmarks>organize bookmarks then select export as html and send it to your docs folder if it's V8 or later it's 'bookmarks>show all bookmarks then as above. Importing them is similar.

However since you cant open FF then you need to look in C:\users>name>app data>mozilla...next bit depends on operating system but you should be able to find the bookmarks backup folder and copy it to the docs folder.

As for not starting does she leave the M/C on all the time and just puts it to sleep or hibernates it over night? If so shut the m/c down, switch it of at the mains, leave it for a few minutes and then re-start it

look at Firefox will not start | Troubleshooting | Firefox Help (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20will%20not%20start?s=firefox+not+starting&r=3&as=s)

which may give you the answer you need.

Thanks green (I'm the friend) I've tried all that already, the only thing I get is the Mozilla crash report. I don't mind reinstalling Mozilla but I wonder if there is a way to recover my bookmarks. I hadn't synchronised them for a long time, karma is.., but I'm lost and I just ask anyone and everyone.

Your bookmarks are saved in your profile.
Have a read of this article and then follow the instructions, when you've found them just right click>copy then paste them where you can find them you can then import them back into the new install.

https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles#w_finding-your-profile-without-opening-firefox

Once you've got your bookmarks saved elsewhere delete the entire mozzila apps folder before re-installing FireFox

any queries come back to us.

In that case there's nothing else you can do except delete and re-install FireFox. If you have some of the bookmarks in IExp then you can import them during the instal

Google Mozbackup first and use it... It gets everything for you.

If there's nothing in his profile folder which it appears there isn't then there's nowt to back up.

You could try creating a new profile before you unistall FF and see if it will start afterwards.

Can I refer the young lady to the answer I gave some moments ago on the 'links not opening in email', thread.

Link HERE (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Setting_Your_Default_Browser#Using_a_third-party_utility).

Extract.

To set your Mozilla browser as the default program on Windows Vista and above, go to "Start -> Default Programs -> Set your default programs", find your Mozilla browser in the list of programs and set it as the default.

Obviously my answer will be classed as; 'pants', if you only have the one web browser installed....

Link HERE (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad)to explanation of Crash Report workings.

The fault could also be a Flash update gone wrong or an Add-on snagette.

Thank you Spurlash, you might be right about the Flash update gone wrong. Unfortunately, nothing seems to work  and the only reason that I haven't smashed my laptop yet is that I've been on the road for some time and am using a different machine.
