Apologies for the simple question and asking on behalf of a friend, what type of NDT is used in the aerospace industry and do you have to be a qualified engineer to carry out the inspections? Can you do an NDT course only?

Thanks

Presuming you are in Australia, you have to do the appropriate training to meet CASA reqs.

Most used where I work - Magnetic Particle, Eddy Current and Non Penetrant Dye.

Some useful links below -

Non Destructive Testing - Australian Institute for Non Destructive Testing (http://www.aindt.com.au/) - Aust Institute of NDT

National Aerospace NDT Board of Australia > Home (http://www.ndtboard.com/) - Aust Aersospace NDT Board

Its a nice little niche to be in!

Good article on Wikipedia.Off the top of my head X-ray,ultrasonic,dye penetrant ,all dependent on which part of the aircraft is under inspection.Usually carried out by specialist firm especially X-rays but some testing (after suitable training )carried out by LAMES eg; testing of fan blades on RB211 and IAE V2500 engines.Dont know what qualifications reqd for specialist firms but would imagine quite high educational quals reqd

Another good source of NDT and other inspection techniques are in the FAA A& P Handbook AC43-13.
