Joining emirates with a DUI?

5 years ago I made a mistake and got caught driving after drinking. It is a misdemeanor, I can still get a police certificate, no problems with my FAA medical. I don't drink anymore. Can I fly for living in the Middle East?

I don't think anyone here would even check, or care. However my experience is restricted to Dubai.

I have been in Saudi Arabia for a year and can't remember ever being asked. No one here seems to care. It isn't like the USA post 9/11 where they background check your 1st grade math scores.

Puma don't even think about possible background check that will stop you from joining EK, if you choose so.
I know EK 777 captain who has been terminated by previous employer for being seriously under influence in the cockpit. Few months later, to my surprise, he was hired by EK.

Hell you'll be right at home here in the Middle East. I've seen more boozing here then any other place I've been to. As long as you have a FAA license and a 1st class medical nobody will bother you.

It probably does in fact turn up when the country you apply for residence conducts their police check, but as mentioned above, is not disqualifying...if all else fails, then apply as executive vp at US Airways...Doug would like the company:}

United Arab Emirates has a 0 tolerance when it comes to drivers who drink. A friend of mine went to the interview at EK and he said it was mentioned that if you got caught no matter the percent on liquor and driving you would go to jail for a month and when you got out your job would still be there! :confused: So go figure. They don't care.

I am interested in a slot at EK. I got a DUI in the US almost 10 years ago? Where does EK stand on stuff like this? Should I spent the time & money going to DXB?

Well, it all depends on one thing. Was the DUI for driving a car or a plane?

If it's the former, you should be fine. Why dont you apply and find out. If it's not OK your application will be rejected before you come to DXB anyway!

Thank you Harry. Forgot to say it was a car DUI. Interestingly, the app only refers to a criminal record. In the US, there are seperate and distinct questions regarding alcohol related offenses. I felt they were only refering to "criminal criminal" offenses and I answered "No" to the question. (ie...No, I do not have a criminal record.) I have applied, recently passed the MD11 eval and am due to get DXB dates in January. I am more than willing to go to DXB for the next step, but I am trying to learn more so that I don't surprise them or get accused of omitting anything. I answered the app to my best understanding.

Thoughts now? Really appreciate the input. Not really guilty of the offense, but thats another story all together. Dont trust lawyers.

Seriously, I doubt they'd even ask unless you draw attention to it and it hardly counts as a criminal offence unless you did some 'bird'.

What about how its addressed on medicals? Per question "U" on all FAA medicals, I have to admit to my dewey every six months. (ie...Previously reported.) I would hate to sell all i own, move entire family 8K miles and get the boot cuz I mislead the company. Can't imagine that would look great in the upgrade interview.

Again, really appreciate your thoughts. I have been tossing this around a ton lately, and ever opinion counts. Lot riding on this.

Harry has the right advice.

Stick with the aviation stuff, don't even hint that you have had an offence in the past and I'm sure as hell they won't ask.

The problems most people encounter are the ones that they bring to the notuce of those that are doing the interview.

Don't sell everything till your here or have an exit strategy, you need a little time to settle in and know the pitfalls and the positives, then you can clean out the closet.

I will echo Caynine's words of advice to anybody moving to any job in the Gulf, put your stuff in a storage unit..get settled here, make sure wifey and kids are happy(most important!) just having the stuff at home is sometimes a nice thing for mommy and the kids to know..who knows you may want to ship it here at a later date if you buy a place..some attachment to home is a good thing.:ok:

Just out of curiousity........ can't one get a pardon for such an offence after 10 years? I know it is possible in some countries, just wondering if it is possible in the States. I imagine you have looked into that already though.

DUI would fall under the category of a traffic offence as opposed to a criminal offence. If it happened 10 yrs ago and you have been employed till now, then I dont think this will cause ur application to be declined. To be granted an airside pass, the you need to have been security vetted and yes they will be looking into criminal offences and dates... Otherwise you have nothing to worry about.:cool:

FAA medical question "U" asks if you have ever had a DUI. Once you say yes....its a forever thing here (regardless of which state you reside).

Hi guys, I'm working for a certain 737 operator from the emerald isle but I have passed the interview for emirates, all good so far right? My issue is that a number if years ago I acquired a DUI, stupid mistake but it happened nothing I can do now to change that. So my issue is if I accept the new job will I get knocked back once I go for the visas for traveling. Has anybody got any experience of this type of situation 1st hand. Thanks guys
