I'm guessing that the conversation at the RAF website went along the lines of :

PR Bod 1. What's the name the Americans are using for Ellamy?
PR Bod 2. Why?
PRB1. Need it for the caption for this photo.
PRB2. Err... It'll be something a bit odd. Errr..... Oddessy Dawn, I think.
PRB1. That sounds like a gay nightclub. Are you sure?
PRB2. Er, think so.... Hey, hang on - you sure they're American? Can't see the markings. Could be Italian
PRB1. D'you know the Italian codename?
PRB2. Nope.
PRB1. Sod it - the tanker's a VC10, so I'll say Ellamy. Anyway it'll give someone the opportunity to start another thread about Harriers on Pprune. Might even get them to double figures.
PRB2. What's not to like?
Ppruners various: <Sigh>

It has enough space for a Harrier to land on:O

Which bl##dy idiot put a radar on that Harrier? Parliament was quite clear as long ago as 2002 about those damn things...

Summing up the position, Sir Robert Walmsley told us that upgrading the GR7/GR9 for air defence capabilities—

... would cost an immense amount of money, take an enormous amount of time, and would result in an aircraft that is not as good at its primary role as it is today.[

The sooner these Europeans and their American suppliers of new-fangled kit listen to the experts the better. So what if it can find the tanker, keep tabs on a wing man, give air-to-ground ranging, and even mapping... and help you home to mum? Sir Jock's bunch said it was a bad idea, so belt up and cut it off.

Archimedes
4th Nov 2011, 16:44
To be fair, Sir Robert was talking about the notion of taking the GR7s and upgrading them to AV-8B+ standard. The GAO did a report on the USMC remanufacture programme, with the headline points being:

GAO found that the:
(1) Navy estimates that it would cost between $23
million and $29.5 million to rebuild each AV-8B aircraft using refurbished parts;
(2) Marines could procure new AV-8B radar attack aircraft for about $23.6 million each;
(3) Navy does not have the ability to rebuild AV-8B aircraft as quickly as new aircraft can be produced;
(4) Navy could revise its procurement strategy to procure new radar aircraft, since the remanufacture program is conducted under single-year contracts;
(5) Navy is having difficulty disassembling older aircraft and acquiring replacement components in a timely and
cost-effective manner; and
(6) surplus radar equipment intended for use in rebuilding the aircraft may not be available as soon as anticipated, which could cause delays in the remanufacture program.

(Navy Aviation: AV-8B Harrier Remanufacture Strategy Is Not the Most Cost-Effective Option (Letter Report, 02/27/96, GAO/NSIAD-96-49). (http://www.fas.org/man/gao/ns96049.htm))

Airpolice - when I read the article earlier, it referred to II(AC) as 'II(Air Cooperation) Squadron' [sic]. <sigh>

500n, actually, that would seem to be beyond the capability of HQ Strike (as was) at High Wycombe.

I could accept, in days gone by, the defence of "this is just PR stuff" but since so much money is spent on this, they really do need to get it right or not bother!

Well it is a sad day if a RAF HQ can't even get the "Air Commadore" correct.

We will be seeing Air Marshall or Air Marshell, Flight Lewtenant and Sargent next :O

Just shows the result when governments interfere and civilianise everything.

As it happens, the last Summer Ball I went to was good fun in some ways - got lashed - very poor in others. Food of a much lower standard as the contractor was civvie. Huge difference.

Whether it's yer canapes or a Sea Harrier returning from Ops last week - times have changed.

I doubt very much that phot was researched by a serving member of the RAF. Unless they also made the canapes at that Ball..............

I'm expecting Flight Leader Navigating Officer, he sits behind the Pilot Officer, and of course Lootenant.

Today's issue is not simple spelling mistakes, it is just the latest in a line which I am confident will continue to amuse us for years to come.

The usual excuse of a typo at the edge of a deadline will not wash. With a & o being as far apart on the keyboard as two letters can get, it is not a typing error, but a basic spelling mistake, compounded by a failure to proof read.

I was and suppose should have titled my post UFO's near Glasgow.

Around 0850 4th November my wife spotted 10+ glowing lights that seemed to come from the ground climb at an angle of 30 degrees and make a right turn.

We live in Cumbernauld, close to EGPG and know the commercial traffic patterns for GLA pretty well.

During the incident commercial aircraft could be seen in the approach pattern for GLA as normal - 23 approach.

Weather was 5C unlimited visibility.

Once I started watching them, I would say the glow could have been reheat - but was glowing for the whole time they were visible - about 90 seconds. The direction of climb looked to be 90 degrees from 05/23 runway. They then appeared to turn 90 degrees right. Climb angle looked around 25 degrees.

Any ideas?

I did get a video on a compact (720p) camera not great quality due to autofocus, etc. But can clearly be seen at a line of site range of 15 miles or so.

How do you explain this one ?

"Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg answers questions from the worlds media duria his visit to RAF Waddington to welcome home troops that took part in Operation Ellamy in Libya."

Since they may be reading this thread, it will be interesting to see how long they take to correct it.

Perhaps Brize is so big they neeed two Station Commanders, both called Stamp. Or is it just another example of how the MOD don't know who is in charge?

Orca... to continue being fair to Sir Robert Walmsley, the "remanufacture" program to turn AV-8Bs (and thus also GR.7/9 if so desired) consisted of jacking up the wings & tail and driving a new fuselage under it.
