Can anybody shed some light on the current terms and conditions for flight crew (pay, roster etc) and is the Dutch tax really as bad as 52%?

I suggest you ignore anything the "Shell Management" character has to say. Even if he does work for Shell, which I doubt, his posts come across as those of an extremely unprofessional character.
The top level of Dutch tax is indeed 52%, and starts at a fairly low level. Any professional job is going to be hit by it. In addition, you'll need to pay at least 100+ Euros a month in mandatory health insurance, and then there are other little bits and pieces too. Running a car is seriously expensive, if you want to do so. I can't wait to get out of the country and move to somewhere that doesn't force me to subsidize losers and politicians to quite such a high extent!
On the plus side, the country seems to have weathered the economic storm better than most, and their trains are ok.
