According to the FAQ's one can click on a 'create a poll' icon to create a poll in a new thread, but I don't have one on my @start a new thread page. Has the facility been disabled or just gone AWOL?

Needs to be enabled by mods, you'd normally see the options down below under "additional options"

Yep that's where I would expect it, I'm sure there have been polls on here.

Not quite. "Needs to be added or created by mods" is the situation.

Mods can't enable others to add polls, but mods can add a poll to an existing thread (if asked very nicely with a genuine and reasonable justification :)), or start a new thread with a poll.

As you can perhaps gather, some of the functionality alluded to in the generic vbulletin FAQs has been disabled on PPRuNe for various reasons over time.
