THE Government is to crack down on exorbitant credit-card fees charged by airlines and concert-ticket sellers for processing customer payments writes Aideen Sheehan.
Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton (http://searchtopics.independent.ie/topic/Richard_Bruton_%28politician%29) yesterday announced an overhaul of consumer rights legislation which will ban excessive fees that are higher than the actual cost of processing the payment.
They plan to work with UK authorities to come up with a formula that will stamp out unjustifiable payment charges -- such as the €12 which airlines Ryanair and Aer Lingus (http://searchtopics.independent.ie/topic/Aer_Lingus) currently charge for booking a return flight.
However, Ryanair last night dismissed the move claiming their charge is an administration fee relating to the costs of their booking system.
However, Mr Bruton insisted a mechanism could be found to tackle excessive charges and this would be brought in by statutory instrument as it was particularly urgent with the explosion of online purchases.
