Men don't have to be all man, court rules | The Australian (http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/breaking-news/men-dont-have-to-be-all-man-court-rules/story-fn3dxity-1226160177309)

I heard yesterday that Australia is the only country that doesn't require its citizens to put their sex on their passport and other official documents.

The headline is in fact at variance with the text :

AUSTRALIAN men don't have to have a penis, the High Court says.

The court says two transgender people can be legally recognised as men even though they still have some female sex organs.

The two sentences contain a bit of a non sequitur. If a man's penis was removed, as a result of an accident or surgery, he would still be a man in the legal sense. Transgender is rather different and having various bits and pieces does pose some difficulties. As my son said when we were served in a restaurant in Canada by a person of very indeterminate gender : "He or she probably has a pair of both."

I know one or two blokes here who are female organs. (But that could be a global phenomenon). :\

Don't we all!

Reminds of a lovely story of a fellow I worked with in Madrid, years ago. At the time he spoke very little Spanish. He had been ripped off by a taxi driver and came back into the office apoplectic with fury, and related the story. He finished by saying ....

"But I was able to tell him what I thought of him in Spanish ... I said 'tu eres un coņo.' "

We all started laughing, as apparently the taxi driver had too, because in Spanish the 'c' word although it technically means the same as in English, is not used as a term of abuse in the same way as in English, so he may as well have called the driver a little toe for all it meant!

Says a lot about the differences between Latin and Anglo cultures. :hmm:

Untrue, it's there. An Australian can change their gender on these documents except for the Birth Certificate if they go the snip (or whatever the female to male equivalent is) but it's listed. I have a feeling that NZ doesn't put gender on passports, but I may be wrong.

I suspect that if one puts one's sex on one's passport, the Immigration people might not let one in.

If an unfortunate woman is infertile and for medical reasons has to have a radical double mastectomy, that surely doesn't make her a man? What's different about these two?

This is indeed the reason for the unspecified sex box on Australian passports:

https://www.passports.gov.au/web/sexgenderapplicants.aspx
A passport may be issued to sex and gender diverse applicants in M (male), F (female) or X (indeterminate/unspecified/intersex).

In terms of identifying a person, it is more important to classify them as they will present themselves to the world, than a purely medical genital classification which is only important for medical procedures/relationships.

Male or female?:

Seems to give truth to the old adage:

N for Nuisance, a category reserved for pollies, Z Grade celebutards who think they're special and drunken footy teams returning from post-season party trips. :E

Once knew ( in the social sense, not the biblical, unfortunately ) a stewardess who consistently answered the question 'sex' on any form with the answer .. 'yes please"

It wasn't a test for you, Slash - you know the porn industry too well (hell, you probably have vids of Vaniity and Buck Angel ;) ). It is a test for the run-of-the-mill immigration jobsworth who sees "male" on a document but a "female" standing in front of them.

I could draw your collective attention to the submission made by three eminent neurosurgeons in the court case. They testified that the inherent difficulties likely to be encountered in shrinking the brain and then relocating it to an appendage between the legs was beyond modern science. If attempted quite likely to significantly decrease the applicants ability to focus their attention on anything other than the mammary glands of the now opposite sex.

PS. A senior court official commented after the judgement that the attention aspect was irrelevant as no one would notice.

Least where predictable and logical, I don't think there been a probability distribution that's been found to predict how women think. Who ever comes up with one will get the Nobel prize;).
