Indonesia’s budget carrier Lion Air has denied widespread rumors that three pilots were high on dangerous drugs during a flight, despite the men appearing in court on drugs charges.
Edward Sirait, Lion Air’s director, said on Friday that it was impossible the men were under the influence of crystal methamphetamine and ecstasy, claiming the drugs would have been detected by airport security.
During a hearing in the Tangerang District Court on Tuesday, it emerged that defendant Muhammad Nasri, a Lion Air pilot, was arrested along with two co-pilots Imron and Husni Thamrin.
Nasri told the court that he had asked his Husni to buy the drugs from Lidyawati at a minimarket behind Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on the outskirts of Jakarta, Suara Pembaruan reported.
The trio then flew to Surabaya, East Java, and later returned to Jakarta.
The men were later arrested at the Modern Golf Apartments in Tangerang.
The ecstasy pills were found in Nasri’s pockets and the crystal methamphetamine, known as shabu-shabu, in his tie.
