Maybe the drunken singing was getting too dangerous for the cabin crew, what with all the arms waving about....

I was taught some wonderful British sign Language in my youth. I am still slightly competent but one of the phrases that I can still rattle off in sign language is... " I am an airline pilot and you are a slightly gay assistant. Bring me a coffee and a biscuit". Not the most elloquent phrase but it had one deaf couple pi55ing themselves with laughter a few months back.

Sadly it doesn't translate well, sign language not being even remotely universal. There a many dialects of BSL and at least 8 different local variations for just the word "Holiday" in the UK alone.

The only time I have ever used BSL in anger was to order 4 pints of Hofmeister Export in a "Deaf bar" in Covent Garden. It was noticeable that despite very little actual sound, the patrons of the bar started waving their arms much more wildly after a few jars.
