This appears to be the name of the Qantas Group airline that none of you will be working for...

RedQ firms as name for Qantas's new premium airline in Asia
Matt O'Sullivan
September 13, 2011

IT MAY not trip off the tongue like the Flying Kangaroo, but RedQ is emerging as the most likely name for Qantas's latest spin-off, an ultra-premium airline aimed at executives travelling in Asia.

Qantas is attempting to trademark the name, which branding experts say borrows heavily on its heritage but is distinct enough to signal the arrival of a new entrant in the global aviation game.

The company has kept under wraps the details of its plans for the executive jet-styled airline, but the Herald has learnt that Qantas's lawyers have lodged a range of trademark applications, including those for RedQ, RedQ Executive Express, RedSky and OneAsia.

....................

While red retains the connection to Qantas, it also symbolises good fortune and joy in Chinese culture. Although it will be based in Singapore or Malaysia, China will be a key market for the airline, which will have a fleet of 24 Airbus A320s within several years.

A director of the branding agency Principals, Wayde Bull, said the suggested names showed Qantas was trying to create something new but retain a link to the Qantas reputation.

Qantas considered more than a dozen names for its budget airline before settling on Jetstar.

''Qantas's brand strategy is becoming even more complex. They are seeking to create further brand names that have different price points than just Jetstar and Qantas,'' Mr Bull said.

However, Qantas could face opposition from its arch rival. Virgin Australia secured Red Jet as a trademark several years ago for the charity foundation it operates.

..........................

Qantas's corporate affairs chief, Olivia Wirth, confirmed it was assessing several different names - including RedQ and OneAsia - but a decision had not been made on which would be adopted.

Singapore Airlines has also tried to keep secret the name of its new long-haul budget airline - to be launched next year - but filings in Singapore show it has sought to trademark Scoot.

Red Q, a perfect name because thats exactly going to be where it will end up if Joyce persists along this path. In the Red, bigtime.

Maybe it should be named FarQ, as a tribute from management to all Qantas workers.

Love it !!!
So we will now have "orange cancer' and 'red cancer' spreading globally?
Another good name would be something like 'BMI Baby' except you could call it 'Leigh's Baby' ?

Crazy.:ugh:

Somebody please give me an example of an all business class airline being ultimately successful?

British Airways operate A318's from EGLC to KJFK - two of the biggest financial centres in the world - as BA001 (the Concorde's old flight number). AFAIK, Westbound, it still stops at Shannon, and flies back direct. At the time of launch, I remember the head of BA (was it Eddington??) stating that it would be a year before that route was profitable - is it profitable yet???

PrivatAir, a charter company based in Switzerland, with a handful of B738's, a BBJ, A319LR (and B757 in storage!) does corporate shuttles on behalf of Lufthansa from ports in Germany to the U.S. Prior to that, they were chartering B738/BBJ and A319 to rock tours and I think corporate shuttles for Airbus Industrie.

Silverjet tried, failed and went bust in 2008 with B767 all business class layout between the UK and the US.:{

Does anyone know of any others???

If they are lucky, 'RED-Q' may, at best, end up ruling a very small niche market in Asia - but it will not be the 'master stroke' that makes the QF Group international 'profitable'.

These guys are on a hiding to nothing if this is the best idea they can come up with (copy) to take advantage of the 'asian opportunity'....:rolleyes:

I assume RedQ will be soon followed by the rebranding of the domestic fleet to BarbieQ.

The recruitment campaign will be called "Join the Q":{

If the all J class model desn't work and they have to introduce economy seating then the tickets will be sold as "Back of the Q"

Seriously, I think this permium asian carrier thing is some sort of smoke screen just as Boeing's Sonic Cruiser was a smoke screen for the 787 to keep Airbus confused. AJ has some other strategy.

They can't really think that Asian exec's will hop in a little all biz A320 which can't possibly have enough frequency to go the mutlitude of required destinations. Those execs will want big jets, high frequency, lounges, a frequent flyer program that covers many airlines. Whoops, sounds like CX and SQ!

Additionally, big corporates esp. US ones, only fly with approved airlines that have been risk assessed by head office as part of the corporate contract with the airline. Maybe AIPA should be writing to JP Morgan to point out the zero history and nil experience of Red Q and how it has nothing to do with QF standards.

If they are that well off that they don't fly "regular" airlines they will bypass the Airbus and fly on the following brands: Bombardier, Gulfstream and (in a pinch) Lear.:}

Is it going to be all J class? I've not seen anything to suggest that it will be. I've seen lots of stuff about premium carrier, sleeper seats, etc but nothing to suggest the entire aircraft will be sleeper seats.

The other bit I don't get is that they talk of this thing flying into/ out of Australia but an A320 isn't going to make it SIN/KL to anywhere except PER and DRW. As others have pointed out that means bigger aircraft and THAT means the 787 when it arrives in a couple of years. Of course, the LHR slots that QF are leasing to BA will end up going to this RedQ or whatever they end up calling it and QF will then codeshare on those flights to London.

This podcast has just gone up on ABC's website:
Rowan Dean: Labels and lobby groups, truth well told? - Counterpoint - 12 September 2011 (http://www.abc.net.au/rn/counterpoint/stories/2011/3312808.htm)

It's from my favorite :D (and ABC's ONLY) right wing talkshow "Counterpoint".

Rowan Dean (Gruen Transfer regular) disects the offshoring strategy in terms of marketing and branding. He also looks at Acca/Dacca's wine marketing strategy!;)

For those who want a laugh afterwards last weeks humourous demolition of the Gillard govt. is here:

Patrick Cook: Credit where credit 's due. - Counterpoint - 5 September 2011 (http://www.abc.net.au/rn/counterpoint/stories/2011/3307983.htm):E

Can you believe they let that stuff on the ABC?

Oriana, SQ has with their A340-500 non-stop flight to the USA.

It started as a special "Executive Economy Class Cabin" with a lounging area where you can socialise and stretch out but then they phased out this class of service in favor of 100-seat all-Business Class .

But again, why haven't they tried the same within ASIA? assume it's because their 1st and Raffles class meets the needs of their 'premiun' travellers in that market now.

How much have we paid these "pony tailed mad men" to come up such a puerile name.

Here's a tip you clowns.......the Chinese will see straight thru this charade:
"Oh yeah lets use the colour RED -'cause the Chinese luv it".

I like Far-Q..........air

But my suggestions would be:

Q-less. or
POQ air.

...............and if they must persist with insulting our Chinese neighbours.

The colour red is conspicuous in China apparently, as the smartest people in the room have worked out via their consultants.

The English word 'Red' isn't. It's not Red in Chinese, it's '红色' or '紅色的'. In Malay its 'merah'.

My point is, if that's the angle they're working toward, call it something that identifies with the locals akin to Tiger Airlines in Australia being called 'Ocker True Blue Airlines' instead, will the locals not see through it the same as if the same was done here ? Playing all dem Asians for idiots with all this money we'll be able to repatriate back to Australian shareholders ?

The only fools in this region are are us. For some reason we allow 100% foreign owned companies free access to our natural resources and give them front stage to the lobby desk when the government dare increase the tax or royalty they might pay. It would never happen in any of the Asian countries with their resources or marketplace. Where else in the world would natural gas cost more locally then it does to the markets the foreign nationals export it to ?

Maybe the Qantas management are attacking this with the best intent but they aren't playing in Australia. Asian countries are all about what and who you know, local politics and connected businessmen run the show. AJ will hope he can surround himself with those sort of people or it'll be an expensive side show. If there is only one thing the Asian cultures are united in it is not letting the white man come along and take something unimpeded and for free.

Keg.

I have heard reference to Airbus offering QF the A320 Prestige model fitted with either 1 or 2 additional removeable container fuel tanks. From memory each tank holds 3,000 litres and increases the range to over 4,000nm.

Reckon they should just put the "Q" in the rack and forget about trying to tie it into an identity synonymous with QF. It just doesn't really promote any kind of relevance. Sigh!

I can see it now, the wealthy Chinese exec telling his mates over a beer at the golf club how he's about to book a flight with "LED CLU".
How long do you think Red Q will survive when their target clientel can't even pronounce their name?
What a bunch of NIMRODS this lot of management are.:ooh:

What was the name painted on the SPs when they flew into Taiwan ?
Was it Air Asia or Asian Air.?..something like that.
Far Q seems to be the most appropriate considering the circumstances

Australia Asia airlines.

I quite liked the dynamic ribbon on their aircraft. Perhaps it will make a comeback? Or will the aircraft be all-white with a big, red Q at the back? Probably, knowing the lack of vision and imaginative capacity of these people.

It's a pity Suckling Airways is already taken. It would have done quite nicely for Jetstar! :}

No a bad idea actually - that might gain traction with the local market if and only if the PLAAF don't have some sort of copyright/patent/legal restriction on its use!!:E
