This was long a bee in my bonnet, and the Tories have made good their pledge. Given the retired status of many members here, there may be some who don't know of the scheme, but who may know of a few worthy beneficiaries. So although this isn't strictly about flying, I hope it is allowed to stay for a bit.

Ministry of Defence | About Defence | What we do | Personnel | SPVA | Education Scholarship Scheme for Bereaved Service Children (http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/AboutDefence/WhatWeDo/Personnel/SPVA/EducationScholarshipSchemeForBereavedServiceChildren.htm)

Eligibility to the scheme is open to an applicant who meets all of the following criteria:

Cause of Death – is where a parent/guardian of the applicant has died whilst serving in the HM Armed Forces and the cause accepted by the Armed Forces Pension Schemes or Armed Forces Compensation Scheme as attributable to service.
Date of Death – the deceased parent/guardian died after 0001 hours on 1 January 1990.
Education – the start date for the scheme is 1 September 2010 and the applicant must be in full-time education or training for this academic year. No payment will be made for any part of a further education or university course attended prior to this date.
Relationship – at the time of death, the deceased serviceperson had legal responsibility for the applicant, or the applicant was the biological child of the deceased and was born within 42 weeks of the parent’s death. This includes biological children, adopted children, children subject to a special guardianship order and stepchildren resident with and dependent on the deceased. Fostered children are not eligible.
Place of Study – scholarships will only be provided for study in the United Kingdom.
The scheme provides the following:

Further Education – the scheme will provide a scholarship to enable a bereaved child to stay in further education (year 6 in England/year 5 in Scotland/college/training course etc). This will normally be paid for 2 years but may be extended to 3 years if required by the syllabus. It will not be extended in order to repeat part of a syllabus or retake exams.
University – the scheme will provide a contribution towards the cost of a first undergraduate degree for both tuition and maintenance fees. Since tuition fees vary across the UK according to place of domicile and place of study, this scholarship is adjusted to provide a similar level of support to all applicants across the UK. It will not be extended in order to repeat part of a syllabus or retake exams.
Amounts – the annual amounts of further education and university scholarships are given in DIN01-110. They are paid termly on the date of registration and around 15 January and 15 April and are not liable for Income Tax.
Please refer to DIN01-110 on how to apply for a further education and university scholarship.
