Last February I started a thread to see if any of our friends remembered an airfield/airstrip at Masafi, now in the UAE. We had a lot of interesting replies from Brakedwell, JW411, Old, not bold, Herod, Teeteringhead and others.

So I wonder if any of you, or anyone else, can help with the following.
I just got news from my friend in the UAE with whom I have explored a number of airstrips (including Masafi) that he recently came across what might be another old landing strip. It is NW of Shawkah in Ras al Khaimah Emirate, and about 20km SSW of Manama, that some of you knew. It is 370m long by 25m wide, oriented 11/29, and has piles of stones alongside the "runway", with V-shaped piles to mark the corners.

The Google Earth image is below; it is at 25 08 09N, 55 59 27E

I looked on the map that Herod posted on the Masafi thread, but can't see anything relevant. Maybe he can though ...
Anyone been there or know of it? Thanks

Laurence

Since I posted this, my friend Brien in the UAE has found a map with "Wadi Shawkah" marked with a red outlined runway at the correct orientation. You can see it on the attached map at coordinates 82N, 95E. Enlarge the centre part of the map. Anyone recognise it?
And what is "Kahn, disused" at 80/80?

Hi again. I can offer a bit of help. I've got Shawkah (or Shauka) on my map, and a logbook entry showing tactical formation along the Wadi Shawkah. The other field is Jebel Faiyah. I can't recall any details, but since I log three flights out of there, it must have been at least a helicopter strip back in '68, probably linked to a fort close by.

Thanks Herod. How about a reunion in the UAE desert one day?
