Anything owned by the City of Los Angeles is pretty much third world these days.

So much for the drive home being the most dangerous part of the flight.

Time for the city bean counters to do a new cost/benefit analysis regarding airport terminal equipment maintenance budgeting?

How does a jetway "collapse"? Structural failure? Sounds unlikely.

The description in the article makes it sound more like a sudden movement, auto-leveler trouble or maybe a misplaced stepping plate.

American Airlines spokesman Ed Martelle told NBC4 the jetbridge would remain closed until the airline finds out what lead to the collapse.
"If we can determine what went south," he said, "we'll make changes to that particular jetbridge, get it back in service and see if that's the situation with other jetbridges."
Martelle says at LAX, jetbridges are the responsibilities of the airlines which use them.

Hmm. Looks like though LA World Airports owns the gates, the lessee is responsible.

As to what went wrong, I don't know. The full article mentioned that the aircraft sustained damage also.

Question from slot #4:
"... How does a jetway "collapse"? Structural failure? ..."

There are several of these jetway mishaps, this from the NTSB records:

NTSB Identification: CHI83LA272 .
The docket is stored on NTSB microfiche number 21451.
...OZARK AIRLINES, INC.
... Tuesday, June 21, 1983 in MILWAUKEE, WI
Aircraft: DOUGLAS DC-9-30, registration: N980Z
Injuries: 1 Serious, 9 Uninjured.

A JETWAY COLLAPSED AS PASSENGER LOADING COMMENCED. THE DRIVE GEAR FAILED & OIL WAS FOUND TO BE CONTIMINATED WITH WATER. HEAT HAD TRANSFERRED TO THE WORM GEAR WHICH WAS MISALIGNED & WAS NOT MANUFACTURED FOR ACFT USE SPECIFICATIONS.

The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
AIRPORT FACILITIES, RAMP FACILITIES..FAILURE,TOTAL

= = = == = =

If it was an AA jetway, everything might cite the mishap as "Jetbridge" rather than "jetway".

Maybe someone will post some records of other cases (I recall one with pilot-injuries but that is probably in the old paper files).

Edit, found another Jetway collapse:
Jetbridge failed BOS, 22Mar06, FAA # 20060322004329C

Seems like the FAA takes special pains to dissuade people from reading its reports. Why would they print the narrative in ALL CAPS? :ugh:
